PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Devin Houle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonathan Goldsmith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Goldsmith has chosen Dos Equis as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Devin Houle!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jonathan Goldsmith!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Houle shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Goldsmith counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Houle goes for a double leg but Goldsmith avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Goldsmith continues to drive forward.
Houle is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Goldsmith to keep the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Devin Houle. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Goldsmith gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Goldsmith tries to stand but can't do so whilst Houle controls his leg.

Goldsmith seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Houle does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Houle is defending against the submission attempts here by Goldsmith.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Houle is not content to let Goldsmith control the position.
Goldsmith moves into full mount! Houle won't be happy about that!

Goldsmith moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Houle has worked his arm free - good work by Houle!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Goldsmith cracks Houle with a big elbow.

Goldsmith swings around for an armbar but Houle sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Goldsmith's guard.

Houle trying to control the position from guard on top but Goldsmith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Goldsmith is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Houle trying to control but Goldsmith is working from the bottom.
Houle is really struggling to control Goldsmith but he's trying to hold on to the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Goldsmith displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Houle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Houle fails with the takedown

and Goldsmith decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Houle's guard.
Goldsmith wants to control from the top but Houle keeps moving.
Houle seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Goldsmith wants to stand but Houle has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jonathan Goldsmith.

Houle seems to be working for a kimura but Goldsmith defends the submission attempt.
Houle seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Goldsmith does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Goldsmith tries to roll over but Houle keeps him under control.

Houle is looking to take a break and control but Goldsmith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Houle is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Goldsmith doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Houle.

Houle doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Goldsmith counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Goldsmith stalks Houle and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Houle's face. Houle staggers backwards, shaken.


It looks like Devin Houle has been cut.

Goldsmith shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Goldsmith is looking to take a break and control but Houle is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Houle is trying to control but can't.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Goldsmith is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Houle has managed to free his arm - good work.

Goldsmith is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Houle sees it coming and defends easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jonathan Goldsmith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Houle closes this distance looking for a takedown but Goldsmith circles away.
Houle shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Goldsmith but Goldsmith pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Houle tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Goldsmith defends well and Houle ends up having to push Goldsmith into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Goldsmith has picked Houle up - he's going for a ride! Goldsmith dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Goldsmith thows a huge punch but Houle dodges it nicely.
Houle won't allow Goldsmith to pass to mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Goldsmith works his way into full mount!

Goldsmith is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!

Goldsmith fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Houle, pushing him back against the cage.
Houle is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Goldsmith to keep the fight standing.
Goldsmith lands with a short shot to the head.
Houle letting Goldsmith take a breather here.
Goldsmith is trying to maintain a safe position but Houle gets an underhook and turns Goldsmith into the cage.
Houle jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Goldsmith walks away with a smile on his face. Houle gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Houle misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Houle avoids the head kick by Goldsmith.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Houle avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Goldsmith closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Goldsmith lands in his opponent's guard.
Goldsmith looking to sit in guard and control but Houle gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Houle wants to control from the top but Goldsmith keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Houle is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Goldsmith is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Devin Houle has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Goldsmith throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Houle.
Houle shoots in and drives through. Goldsmith sprawls well.
Goldsmith has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Houle is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Houle fails to land the takedown.

and Goldsmith counters with a nice leg kick.

Houle drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Goldsmith wants to get back to his feet but Houle drags him back down.
Goldsmith is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Houle's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Goldsmith is trying to maintain the position but Houle is very close to passing his half guard.
Goldsmith is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Houle is staying active.
Devin Houle has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Well Goldsmith has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
