PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ronald Zubar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniel Sobota (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, Ronald Zubar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Daniel Sobota!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Ackerman and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sobota shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Sobota showed some decent athleticism there.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Sobota looks to land a strike but Zubar avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Zubar has a closed guard, preventing Sobota from standing up.
Zubar is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Zubar is working an open guard so Sobota takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Zubar lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Zubar looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Sobota scores with a nice strike.
Zubar throws out a token jab with nothing on it.

Sobota has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Sobota tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Zubar manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Zubar uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Sobota.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Sobota.
Zubar takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Sobota will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Zubar misses with a series of wild punches.
Sobota attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Sobota lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

Sobota throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.

Sobota looks to throw the jab but Zubar is out of range.
Ronald Zubar is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Sobota gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Sobota misses with a right hand
and Zubar counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Zubar takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Sobota closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Zubar's guard.
Sobota throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Zubar works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Sobota has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Sobota wants to control from the top but Zubar keeps moving.

Sobota stands and steps away. Zubar gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

and Zubar counters with a nice uppercut.
Daniel Sobota seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sobota avoids the body shot from Zubar.

Sobota manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Zubar on his heels. He'll look to pass Zubar's guard now, I'm sure.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sobota accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Zubar not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Sobota wants to control from the top but Zubar keeps moving.
Sobota throws a strike but Zubar rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Sobota manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sobota changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Zubar fights it off and pushes away nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Daniel Sobota dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


A cross from Sobota lands.
Zubar throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Sobota stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Zubar slaps away a takedown attempt from Sobota, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Sloppy strikes from Sobota. Those never looked like landing.

and Zubar counters with a nice leg kick.
Ronald Zubar is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Sobota misses with a body shot.
Zubar misses with a leg kick.
Sobota misses with a hook. Zubar ducked under it nicely.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Zubar crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Sobota - the referee stops the clock and Zubar gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Sobota. Zubar manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

The fight stays on the outside here - Zubar looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Sobota walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Zubar scores with a head kick. Sobota tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.

Sobota throws a body punch but Zubar moves out of range.
Zubar on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

Sobota looks to land a right hand but Zubar moved out of range.
Sobota misses with a wild body shot.
Zubar avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Sobota darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Sobota decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Zubar avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
We've been told by Zubar's head coaches at London MMA Club that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Sobota shoots for a takedown but Zubar saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Sobota throws a hook but Zubar blocks it.

Zubar takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Zubar is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.
Sobota misses with a takedown attempt - Zubar sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ronald Zubar has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Sobota.
Zubar throws a hook but Sobota avoids it easily.
Sobota shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Zubar as he jumps to the side.

Sobota closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Zubar did well to prevent Sobota getting side control.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Sobota connects with a nice short shot to Zubar's temple.

Daniel Sobota showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Sobota shoots in looking for a takedown. Zubar tries to sprawl out of it but Sobota keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Zubar manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Sobota throws a looping overhand right but Zubar ducks down to avoid it.
Sobota fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Zubar manages to avoid it.
Sobota misses with a double jab
and Zubar cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Sobota shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Zubar defends it nicely.
Sobota tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Zubar manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Zubar leaves Sobota with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Ronald Zubar has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Sobota.

Sobota scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Ronald Zubar has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Sobota shoots for a double leg takedown but Zubar sprawls well. He's pushed Sobota's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Zubar throws a jab but it's blocked by Sobota.
Sobota tries to close the distance and clinch but Zubar swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

A looping hook to the body misses from Sobota. Zubar does a little dance to reset his feet.

Zubar looks to land a left hand but Sobota moved out of range nicely.
Sobota delivers a nice body kick.
Zubar thuds a left hand into Sobota's body.
Daniel Sobota is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Sobota closes the distance and clinches.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Zubar throws out a loose jab but Sobota uses good head movement to avoid it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Zubar enables Sobota to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Zubar manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Sobota postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Ronald Zubar.
I think Sobota has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
