PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Hassan Mason (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Niini Saulisto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Niini Saulisto was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Hassan Mason!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Niini Saulisto!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Saulisto tries for a takedown but Mason circles away easily

and Mason counters with a single leg into guard. Saulisto didn't expect that.
Mason has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Hassan Mason wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Mason tries to keep at a distance but Saulisto has taken the fight into the clinch.

Mason keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Saulisto's efforts to push away.

Mason breaks from the clinch.

Saulisto fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mason, pushing him back against the cage.
Saulisto tries for a takedown. No joy.
Mason will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Saulisto up against the cage.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Mason creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Saulisto is looking to break free of the clinch but Mason has double underhooks.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Mason lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mason is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Saulisto wants to get back to full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Hassan Mason wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Mason goes for a double leg but Saulisto avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Saulisto continues to drive forward.
Saulisto jumps guard but Mason stands there with Saulisto around his waist. Saulisto gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Hassan Mason has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Niini Saulisto.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Saulisto's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Saulisto tries to pull guard but Mason forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Mason has Saulisto pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Mason pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Saulisto tumbling to the mat - Mason dives into Saulisto's guard.
Saulisto is trying to hold Mason in close to prevent damage but Mason has managed to pass into half guard.
Mason wants to stand up but Saulisto is controlling the position.
Saulisto is looking to control Mason's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Saulisto avoid being mounted?

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mason perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Saulisto wants to get back to full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Hassan Mason.
Saulisto throws a leg kick but Mason sees it coming and checks it nicely.

Mason bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Saulisto is looking for a sweep.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Saulisto darts in looking for a takedown but Mason gets double underhooks and turns Saulisto into the cage.
Saulisto goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Mason leaning against his opponent.
Saulisto jumps guard but Mason stands there with Saulisto around his waist. Saulisto gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Mason breaks the clinch.
Saulisto throws a series of punches but Mason avoids them all with ease.
Niini Saulisto seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Saulisto misses with a takedown

and Mason decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Saulisto's guard.
Hassan Mason has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Niini Saulisto.
Mason slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Mason has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Saulisto is proving hard to escape from.

Saulisto moves into the clinch.
Saulisto wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Saulisto is working for takedown but Mason is calmly controlling the position for now.

Mason manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Mason controls Saulisto momentarily but Saulisto frees himself.
Mason is controlling Saulisto's posture.
Mason is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Saulisto trying to control the position from guard on top but Mason is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Saulisto looking to score a takedown here. Mason is defending well but Saulisto drives through and ends up in Mason's guard.
Saulisto is breathing heavily.
Saulisto wants to control from the top but Mason keeps moving.
Saulisto stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mason swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mason looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Mason pushes Saulisto off and scrambles back to his feet.
Mason cracks a nice hook into Saulisto's ribs.
Mason shoots and misses
and Saulisto counters with a two punch combo.

Saulisto darts in and clinches Mason up against the cage.
Saulisto is trying to push Mason away but Mason has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Mason breaks from the clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Mason closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Saulisto manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Saulisto gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Mason to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Mason slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Saulisto had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mason defends it easily.
Mason works a leg free and moves into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Mason is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Saulisto has managed to free his arm - good work.
Mason is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Saulisto has his hands clasped together around Mason's back. He's all about the action.
Saulisto has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mason is working away from the top position though.

Mason performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Mason's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

We're going to have a standup here because Hassan Mason wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Saulisto closes the distance and clinches.

Saulisto is trying to pull guard but Mason turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Mason pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Horrible takedown by Saulisto or perhaps it was just good defense by Mason which made him look bad.

Mason decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Saulisto takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Mason is pressing down on Saulisto's thigh, looking to free his foot. Saulisto is holding on for now.
Saulisto is trying to maintain the position but Mason is very close to passing his half guard.
Mason takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Hassan Mason overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Hassan Mason wasn't doing enough on the ground.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Mason.
Mason staying out of range there.
Mason thuds a left hand into Saulisto's body.
Mason shoots for a double leg takedown but Saulisto sprawls well. He's pushed Mason's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Niini Saulisto has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Hassan Mason is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Saulisto throws a sloppy head kick and Mason moves out of range easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Hassan Mason showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mason, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
