PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Abel Hardin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Scuba Steves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Abel Hardin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Scuba Steves!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, William Peck and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Steves throws a body kick despite being completely out of range

and Hardin holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Hardin could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Hardin putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Steves in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.

Steves jumps guard and drags Hardin to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Steves wants to sweep here but Hardin controlling him for the moment.
Hardin might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Hardin showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Steves looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Hardin stays in close to Steves's body and controls the position.
Hardin is looking to work some ground and pound but Steves has wrist control.
Hardin's corner is telling him to maintain position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Abel Hardin.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Steves.
Hardin gets back to half guard.

Hardin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Hardin is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Steves pulls his head out easily.

Hardin wants to get back to full guard but Steves has passed into side control.

Hardin tries to bench press Steves off him but Steves keeps the position.
Steves throwing strikes but Hardin manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
Hardin scores with a couple of short elbows.
Steves can't do much from the bottom here.
Hardin misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Hardin creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Steves sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Hardin sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Steves is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Hardin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Steves keeps working.

Hardin is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Steves is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Hardin has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Hardin is chipping away with strikes.
Steves is not content to let Hardin control the position.
Steves tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Hardin presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

Steves wants to control but Hardin is having none of it.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hardin throwing strikes but Steves recovers to half guard. A much better position.

Hardin is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Steves is just riding it out for now. Hardin eventually gives up the hold.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Abel Hardin dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Hardin tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Steves manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Hardin on his heels. He'll look to pass Hardin's guard now, I'm sure.

Hardin is pressing down on Steves's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Hardin wants to sweep but no luck.

Hardin is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Steves is aware though and is defending well.
Hardin looking to hit a scissor sweep but Steves is one step ahead there.
Steves wants to control from the top but Hardin keeps moving.
Steves is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Steves showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

Hardin looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Steves passes into half guard.

Steves is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Hardin is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Steves pulls his head out easily.

Steves is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Hardin is refusing to be controlled, as Steves sits in half guard.

Steves performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

Steves is keen to just control but Hardin is a slippery customer.

Hardin is staying active underneath Steves, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Hardin tries to roll over but Steves keeps him under control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Steves thows a huge punch but Hardin dodges it nicely.
Steves seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hardin is looking for a sweep. Steves is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Scuba Steves showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Steves feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Hardin is looking for a triangle but Steves pushes his legs off easily.
Hardin preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Steves got a little sloppy there for a moment and Hardin has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Steves has managed to get both his arms back between Hardin's legs - danger averted.

Steves stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Hardin shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Steves sprawls well. Steves wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Hardin gets slowly back to his feet.

Steves shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Hardin is trying to defend but Steves finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Steves passes the guard and advances to mount!

Steves sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Hardin throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
Hardin is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Steves is working for a guillotine from mount but Hardin frees his head quite easily.

Steves seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Steves seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hardin does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Hardin has a hand on Steves's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Steves takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Hardin is squirming around, avoiding Steves's attempts to control the action.
Hardin bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Hardin throws an elbow that misses. Steves uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Hardin's guard. Nice move by Steves!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Hardin is on top in guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Scuba Steves comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Steves has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
