PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Joel Charles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tokeshi Hiroshi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Joel Charles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Tokeshi Hiroshi!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Charles darts in and clinches Hiroshi up against the cage.

Charles is trying to trip Hiroshi. He has hold of a leg but Hiroshi is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Charles persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Hiroshi is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hiroshi working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Charles.
Charles controls from within his opponent's guard.
Charles stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hiroshi swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Charles trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Charles controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

That's one minute gone in the round.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Hiroshi looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Charles wants to control but Hiroshi is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Hiroshi trying to mount his opponent but Charles defends it.
Charles trying to control from the bottom.
Charles knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Hiroshi on the ground.
Hiroshi tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Charles.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Charles is trying to get back to full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Joel Charles just wasn't active enough.

Hiroshi dives in and scores a takedown into Charles's guard.
Hiroshi looks winded!
Hiroshi won't allow Charles to get back to his feet.
Hiroshi tries to free his leg and advance position but Charles is retaining full guard.

Charles throws his legs up looking for a submission but Hiroshi uses it to pass to side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Charles regains half guard, as Hiroshi was trying to land strikes.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Charles is not content to let Hiroshi control the position.
Hiroshi might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Charles haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Hiroshi is looking to pass Charles's guard but actually Charles recovers to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Charles is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Charles throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Tokeshi Hiroshi has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Charles closes the distance and pushes Hiroshi back into the cage.

Charles pulls guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Joel Charles will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Charles fails with an attempt to clinch.
Charles really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Hiroshi drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Hiroshi creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Charles tries to buck Hiroshi off but Hiroshi is having none of it.
Charles looking for a sweep but Hiroshi has passed into full mount! Oh no!
Hiroshi looking to control but Charles is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hiroshi landing strikes from the mount.
Charles is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Hiroshi trying to control but Charles is having none of it.
Charles is in all sorts of trouble here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hiroshi with a couple of short strikes.
Hiroshi wants to control the pace but Charles is squirming around nicely.
Charles is trying desperately to improve position.
Hiroshi blocks Charles's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Charles tries to hold on but Hiroshi postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hiroshi prevents Charles from getting the reversal.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Hiroshi wants to control the pace but Charles is squirming around nicely.
Hiroshi throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Charles is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Hiroshi avoids the attempt from Charles to control.
Hiroshi looking to control but Charles is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Charles can't escape the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tokeshi Hiroshi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! And we move into the final round!



Hiroshi closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Charles did well to prevent Hiroshi getting side control.

Charles is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Hiroshi pulls his head out easily.
Charles moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Hiroshi trying to control but Charles is working from the bottom.
Hiroshi takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Charles is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Charles has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Hiroshi is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Charles.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hiroshi passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Charles!
Hiroshi throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.

Hiroshi is working to isolate an arm here. It's a telegraphed submission attempt but he's gone for it anyway - and he's got it! Hiroshi extends the arm and Charles is forced to tap!
