PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Oisin O Conghaile (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mikal Helio (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). O Conghaile comes into the arena with The Deer's Cry by Angelina blaring out of the sound system. Helio has chosen Brazil National Anthem as his entrance music. Both fighters really staring each other down here, as Mikal Helio enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 11 - 0, fighting out of New York, Oisin O Conghaile!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 28 - 9 - 0, fighting out of London, Mikal Helio!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Franklyn Lucas and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
O Conghaile looks for the body kick but Helio saw that one coming.
O Conghaile works over Helio's head and body with a nice combination.
No luck for Helio with that takedown attempt.
Helio will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

O Conghaile gets a clinch.
Helio is trying to drag O Conghaile to the mat but O Conghaile just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Helio changes levels and goes for a takedown here. O Conghaile fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Oisin O Conghaile has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mikal Helio.
Helio shoots in but O Conghaile avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Helio throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around O Conghaile's waist but O Conghaile gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Helio off to one side.
O Conghaile throws a sloppy head kick and Helio moves out of range easily.
O Conghaile pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Helio feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Helio won't allow O Conghaile to get back to his feet.

Helio has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

O Conghaile manages to escape and get back to his feet.
O Conghaile tries to bum rush Helio with a series of wild strikes but Helio uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Mikal Helio seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Helio avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Helio fails with a takedown attempt.
O Conghaile scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
O Conghaile fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Helio is out of range.
Helio throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
A combination from Helio does no damage.
Helio takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

Helio closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into O Conghaile's guard.
We've been hearing good reports from O Conghaile's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
O Conghaile is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Helio stands and throws O Conghaile's legs to the side, diving into side control.
O Conghaile is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

O Conghaile is defending against the submission attempts here by Helio.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Helio is on top in guard.

Helio is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Mikal Helio will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Helio ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
O Conghaile throws a push kick but Helio slaps the foot to one side.
O Conghaile's jab looks to have found its range, popping Helio under the eye.
Helio closes the distance and clinches up with O Conghaile, looking for a takedown. Helio pushes O Conghaile against the cage but O Conghaile circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Oisin O Conghaile has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mikal Helio.
O Conghaile lands a head kick. Helio smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Helio takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.

O Conghaile throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

O Conghaile uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Helio.

Helio shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says O Conghaile as he avoids it easily.
Helio is breathing heavily.

Nice takedown defense from O Conghaile. No joy for Helio on that attempt.

O Conghaile ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
O Conghaile throws a front kick that sends Helio stumbling back into the cage.
O Conghaile tries a head kick but it misses.

O Conghaile lands a big head kick that sends Helio tumbling to the mat! O Conghaile takes a step backwards and waves Helio back to his feet - he wants the finish!


Helio is rocked!


It looks like Mikal Helio has been cut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Helio is still on wobbly legs! Can O Conghaile finish him?
Oisin O Conghaile is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Helio gets caught by a big overhand right and goes down! O Conghaile gets on top of him and starts throwing some serious punches until the ref intervenes and stops the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Oisin O Conghaile!
In his post fight interview, Oisin O Conghaile started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
