PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Phillip Meadows (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ichi Yakuza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Yakuza has chosen The Legend of Zelda, Overworld as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Phillip Meadows!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ichi Yakuza!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yakuza tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Meadows counters by clinching up.
Yakuza looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Meadows decides to pull guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Meadows is on top in guard.
Meadows with a flurry of punches that miss.
Meadows distracts Yakuza with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Meadows has gone for a leg lock! Yakuza slips out almost immediately though and dives into Meadows's guard.

Meadows's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Yakuza has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Meadows is proving hard to escape from.

Meadows pushes Yakuza off and scrambles back to his feet.

and Meadows finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
Ichi Yakuza seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Meadows counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Meadows gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Yakuza has had enough of the clinch but Meadows keeps him there for the moment.

Meadows is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Yakuza's half guard.

Meadows is taking a breather. Yakuza says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Meadows knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Yakuza on the ground.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Meadows throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Meadows drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Meadows decides to stand back up.

Meadows feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Yakuza is working an open guard so Meadows takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

We've been informed that Yakuza has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Phillip Meadows has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Meadows walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Yakuza checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

and Meadows counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Meadows.

Yakuza prevents a takedown attempt there.

Meadows is looking for a triangle but Yakuza pushes his legs off easily.
Meadows wants to sweep here but Yakuza controlling him for the moment.

Meadows has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Yakuza can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Yakuza would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Meadows tries to pass the half guard into mount. Yakuza knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Meadows will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Meadows feints and as Yakuza raises his hands in defense, Meadows changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Meadows stays in close to Yakuza's body and controls the position.
Meadows has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Phillip Meadows.

Meadows closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Yakuza to the mat! Yakuza manages to get full guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Meadows is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Phillip Meadows is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
