PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jake Kirby (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Julio Cesar Chavez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jake Kirby!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Julio Cesar Chavez!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Chris Saunders and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chavez throws an off balance right hand

and Kirby counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Kirby wants to pass the guard but Chavez is keeping the position.
Kirby trying to control the position from guard on top but Chavez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kirby has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Jake Kirby.
Kirby avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Chavez just misses with a punch to the body.
Kirby moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Kirby displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination.

Kirby has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Chavez finds it's way round the side to connect with Kirby's head.
Chavez dodges the punch combination from Kirby.

Kirby fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Chavez to the ground. Kirby is now in Chavez's guard.
Chavez keeping moving, preventing Kirby from controlling successfully.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Kirby slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Jake Kirby.
Kirby shoots in looking for a takedown. Chavez tries to sprawl out of it but Kirby keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Chavez manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Chavez leaves Kirby with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Chavez lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Kirby at a distance.
Chavez lands a nice shot to the body.

Chavez darts in and clinches Kirby up against the cage.

Chavez breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Kirby moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Kirby takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Chavez thows a body shot but no joy.
A jab lands there for Chavez.
Chavez loads up on a big right hand but Kirby slips the punch.
Kirby lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Chavez circles away quickly and effectively.
Kirby swats away the attempt to clinch by Chavez.
Chavez thows a body shot but no joy.
Julio Cesar Chavez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Chavez keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Kirby.
Chavez with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Chavez tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Kirby manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Chavez lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Chavez missing with a left hand there. Kirby was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
A solid leg kick lands there for Chavez.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
A combination from Kirby does no damage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Chavez is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Chavez lands with a shot to the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Julio Cesar Chavez will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Kirby fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Chavez throws a lazy right hand but Kirby sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Chavez looks to throw the jab but Kirby is out of range.
Kirby doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Left hook, right uppercut from Kirby.
Kirby misses with an uppercut.
Kirby moves forwards but Chavez connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Chavez connects with a single shot there.
Chavez avoids a punch combination nicely.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Chavez looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Kirby wants to clinch.
Kirby tries to clinch but Chavez moves out of range.
Chavez scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Kirby tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Chavez was well out of range. Poor timing from Kirby.
Chavez scores with a jab to the body.
Chavez lands the left hand.

Kirby ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Chavez moves away.
Chavez lands with a right hand.
Chavez cracks Kirby with an open hand slap.
Chavez fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Kirby on the side of the head.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Chavez misses with a straight right.
A punch lands to the side of Kirby 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Chavez lands a jab.
Kirby doesn't manage to clinch there - Chavez circles away.
Kirby moves in looking to clinch but Chavez pushes him off.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Chavez connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Chavez is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Chavez throws a body punch but Kirby moves out of range.
Chavez scores with a hook.
Chavez feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Kirby's calf.
Julio Cesar Chavez seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Kirby throws a lazy right hand but Chavez sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Chavez throws a shot to the body.

Kirby fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Chavez to the ground. Kirby is now in Chavez's guard.
Chavez looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

We're going to have a standup here because Jake Kirby wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Chavez misses with a looping right.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Chavez throws the left hand but Kirby avoids the punch easily.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kirby closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Chavez to the mat! Chavez manages to get full guard.
Kirby trying to control the position from guard on top but Chavez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Julio Cesar Chavez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Chavez thows a body shot but no joy.

and Kirby counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Chavez's guard now.
Kirby wants to control from the top but Chavez keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jake Kirby wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Kirby shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Chavez thows a left - swing and a miss!
Chavez lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kirby misses with a takedown attempt - Chavez sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Kirby takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Kirby looks to throw the jab but Chavez is out of range.
Chavez has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Kirby walks into a jab.
Chavez lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Kirby at a distance.
Kirby takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Chavez lands a jab to Kirby's midsection.
Chavez changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Kirby lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Chavez backs up against the cage.
Kirby has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Chavez finds it's way round the side to connect with Kirby's head.
Chavez connects with a crisp jab.
Chavez clobbers Kirby with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.


Kirby is rocked!
Kirby misses with a jab, cross combination.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Chavez.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Chavez scores with a sloppy right hand. Kirby should have avoided that one.
Kirby walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Oh Kirby is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Look low, kick high! Chavez uses the oldest trick in the book to send Kirby tumbling to the canvas, in a truly brutal knockout! Chavez is absolutely delighted - when Kirby wakes up, I doubt he'll be quite so happy!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:56 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Julio Cesar Chavez!
