PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between David Tennant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Yap (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Yap comes into a darkened arena with his song building. The Game kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, David Tennant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jay Yap!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Ren Mimura and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yap misses the shot to the body.

Tennant closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Tennant with the ground and pound but Yap uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Tennant chips away with some ground and pound.
Tennant postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Tennant throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Yap works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Yap working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Tennant.
Yap utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Yap wants to sweep but no luck.
Tennant throws a big elbow that misses.
Tennant throwing strikes from guard but Yap blocks nicely.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Tennant won't allow Yap to get back to his feet.

Tennant lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Yap is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Tennant presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Tennant swings wildly with an uppercut but Yap uses good head movement to avoid it.
Tennant throws a punch but it's blocked by Yap.
Tennant swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Tennant is looking to take this one to the mat.
Tennant is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Tennant is trying to drag Yap to the mat but Yap just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Yap is trying to break free.

Yap pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Tennant jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Tennant misses with a hook. Yap ducked under it nicely.
Tennant takes a swing at Yap's ribcage but misses.
Tennant dodges the punch combination from Yap.
Yap lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.


It looks like David Tennant has been cut.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Jay Yap seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Tennant tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Yap paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Tennant shoots in but no luck this time.

Tennant throws a lazy right hand but Yap sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Tennant throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Yap tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Tennant is in Yap's guard.
Tennant is working Yap over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Yap avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Yap trying to keep a closed guard but Tennant is proving a slippery customer.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Tennant cracks Yap with a solid left hand.
Tennant wants to control from the top but Yap keeps moving.

Yap is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Tennant with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Tennant advances to half guard.
Tennant lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Yap is trying to stand up here but Tennant is controlling him well.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Tennant wants to lay and pray for a moment but Yap keeps working.
Tennant lands with a punch from half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Donk. Yap catches Tennant right on the button with a cross.
Tennant misses with a jab, cross combination.
Tennant lands a glancing blow to the side of Yap's head.
Tennant throws a nice looking combination but Yap bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Yap misses with a wild body shot.
Tennant lands with a hook. Yap tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Yap fails to land with a series of punches.
Yap swinging wildly here.
Yap misses with a body shot.
Tennant will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Yap loads up on a big right hand but Tennant slips the punch.
Yap lands with a good body shot.
Tennant tries to move into range but Yap moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.

Yap connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Tennant momentarily.
Yap lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Tennant backs up against the cage.
Tennant throws the left hand but Yap avoids the punch easily.
Yap misses with a wild body shot.

Yap tries to sprawl but Tennant drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Tennant working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Yap is trying to stand up here but Tennant is controlling him well.
Yap keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Tennant has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Tennant trying to control the action but Yap is working from the bottom.
Yap has hold of Tennant's hands but Tennant slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Tennant content to control rather than advance.
David Tennant overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Tennant is looking to take a break and control but Yap is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Yap looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Yap has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Tennant is working away from the top position though.
Tennant throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Yap on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Tennant lands a nice short elbow.
Tennant working over Yap with some ground and pound. Yap looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

Yap is rocked!
Tennant lands a massive shot from half guard that has rocked Yap! More strikes land and this one is all over! Tennant jumps to his feet and is applauded loudly by the crowd!

Our winner, David Tennant, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
