The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith looks to throw the jab but Ward is out of range.
Ward doesn't manage to clinch there - Smith circles away.

and Ward counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

and Ward counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Ward uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Smith.
Smith scores with a jab to the jaw.
Ward uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Smith.

Ward prevents Smith from breaking the clinch.

Ward throws a punch but it's blocked by Smith.

Smith loads up on a big right hand but Ward slips the punch.

Smith throws a shot from downtown. Ward moves away and avoids it.

Ward tries to clinch there but Smith circles away.

Smith throws a hook but Ward blocks it.
Nice defenses there by Ward.
Smith stuffs the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Grant Ward. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith lunges at Ward with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Ward's hand.
Davey Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith ducks under a wild hook from Ward.
Ward throws a lazy right hand but Smith sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Ward shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Smith counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Ward drives through and clinches with Smith against the cage.
Ward is trying to stall.

Ward breaks the clinch.
Ward throws an overhand right that lands on Smith's shoulder, as Smith tries to avoid the shot.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ward tries to score a power double leg takedown but Smith sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Ward somewhat.
Smith misses with a lunging right hand

Ward throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Smith's waist but Smith gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ward off to one side.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Smith keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Ward is breathing heavily.
Ward slips under a jab from Smith.
