PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Anderson McGinley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kenichi Shirahama (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McGinley comes to the cage accompanied by I got this. Shirahama has chosen Fade To Black as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

With a record of 28 - 13 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kenichi Shirahama!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Paul Tew and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A low kick from McGinley is predictable there
letting Shirahama counter with a right hand.

and Shirahama decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in McGinley's guard.

Shirahama postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! McGinley is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Shirahama, into his guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
McGinley controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


McGinley throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
McGinley lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Shirahama has a takedown stuffed.

McGinley comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

McGinley is pulling down on Shirahama's head. It's preventing any offense from Shirahama, at least for the moment.
My spies in Ryōzanpaku Dojo inform me that Shirahama has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
McGinley fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Shirahama checks it well.

Shirahama uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from McGinley.
Shirahama has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Shirahama there as he acknowledges the shot.
McGinley misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
McGinley connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

That was a close second round but I would say that Anderson McGinley will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Shirahama. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Shirahama seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McGinley does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Shirahama connects with a nice short shot to McGinley's temple.
