The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gavilan throws a leg kick but Kuivanen moved away.

and Kuivanen counters with a shoot takedown. Gavilan fights it but they end up in guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Kuivanen decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Gavilan, up you get!
Gavilan swings for the body but Kuivanen moves out of range.

We've been told by Gavilan's head coaches at Montreal Elite Gym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
That kick from Gavilan tenderised Kuivanen's leg. Kuivanen is trying to keep his angry face on.
A looping hook to the body misses from Gavilan. Kuivanen does a little dance to reset his feet.

Kuivanen uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Gavilan.

Kid Gavilan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Kuivanen shoots in and drives through. Gavilan sprawls well.
Kid Gavilan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Anton Kuivanen.
Gavilan lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Gavilan moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

It looks like Anton Kuivanen has been cut.
Kuivanen tries to close the distance and clinch but Gavilan swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Kuivanen avoids the body shot from Gavilan.

Gavilan lands a left and a right that send Kuivanen crashing to the mat, dazed. Gavilan thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!

Kuivanen is rocked!
