PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Takuji Kawashima (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rory Velko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kawashima's entrance music is Colossal - Wolfmother. A fine choice. Velko is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Wild Eyes. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Takuji Kawashima!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Rory Velko!
The judges for this bout are Ben Hemmingworth, Bruno Hogan and Chris Dean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Velko misses with a double jab.
Kawashima tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Velko defends well and Kawashima ends up having to push Velko into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Kawashima is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Velko to keep the fight standing.
Kawashima fails to pull the fight into his guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Takuji Kawashima. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Velko pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Velko steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Kawashima.
Velko checks a leg kick nicely.
Velko misses with a two punch combination.
Kawashima shoots in looking for a takedown but Velko manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Kawashima's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Velko throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Kawashima.

Kawashima gets a takedown into half guard.
Kawashima lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Kawashima thows a huge punch but Velko dodges it nicely.
Kawashima has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kawashima wants to free his trapped foot but Velko is holding on for dear life with his legs.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Velko is looking to control Kawashima's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Velko avoid being mounted?
Still in half guard, Kawashima seems content to control.

Kawashima is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Velko defends it well.
Kawashima lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Kawashima thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Kawashima is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Kawashima is working for a kimura but Velko is defending it quite comfortably.

Kawashima seems to be looking for submissions.
Kawashima thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Velko's head.

Velko is defending against the submission attempts here by Kawashima.

Kawashima misses with a head shot. Velko uses the momentum to regain guard.
Velko controls Kawashima momentarily but Kawashima frees himself.

Kawashima trying to control the position from guard on top but Velko is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kawashima chips away with some ground and pound.

Velko utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Velko wants to stand but Kawashima is controlling the position.
Velko keeping moving, preventing Kawashima from controlling successfully.
Kawashima with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kawashima stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Velko swivels though and keeps the full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kawashima wants to control from the top but Velko keeps moving.
Kawashima is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Takuji Kawashima dominated that round.
That's time! Kawashima's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Velko with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Kawashima to score with a decent uppercut.
Takuji Kawashima seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Kawashima closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Velko to the mat! Velko manages to get full guard.
Kawashima slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Kawashima is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Velko knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Kawashima tries to move into full mount but can't pass Velko's legs.
Kawashima throws a strike aimed at the side of Velko's head but Velko avoids it well.
Kawashima tries to score with some ground and pound. Velko controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Kawashima wants to control but Velko is keeping him busy.
Velko is looking for a sweep.

Kawashima is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Velko knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Kawashima is trying to get an arm triangle but Velko is defending well.

Kawashima is putting a hurting on Velko here, landing some big shots from side control.
Kawashima trying to control the position but Velko is working away.
Kawashima has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Velko tries to escape but Kawashima is in control.

A control attempt from Velko but he's now mounted!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kawashima lands a big shot there that rocks Velko but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Kawashima looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Kawashima is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Velko can do to turn this around?
Kawashima misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Kawashima moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Velko has worked his arm free - good work by Velko!

Kawashima has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Velko!

Kawashima softens up his opponent with a couple of shots there and then CRACK! One massive shot lands there and Velko is out cold! Kawashima jumps to his feet and celebrates on the cage with the fans, who are, quite frankly, going absolutely mental!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:49 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Takuji Kawashima!
Jumping up and down and very excited, Takuji Kawashima waved his t-shirt featuring Kore Fight Nutrition [TG]'s logo in front of the cameras.
