PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Long Owens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Macario Sakay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sakay is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: alab ng puso by rivermaya. Macario Sakay will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Long Owens!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Macario Sakay!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Shirou Masuda and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Owens stuffs the takedown attempt from Sakay. Sakay gets slowly back to his feet.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Sakay has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Owens really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Owens avoids the head kick by Sakay.
Sakay tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Sakay tries to keep at a distance but Owens has taken the fight into the clinch.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Sakay wants to stall.
Owens looking for a takedown.

Sakay escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Sakay looks winded!
Sakay tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

and Owens holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Owens jumps guard but Sakay stands there with Owens around his waist. Owens gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Owens pulls guard successfully.
Sakay throws a strike but Owens rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Owens wants to get up but he can't break Sakay's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Owens is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Owens is looking to stand up but Sakay won't let him.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sakay striking off his back but it's not causing Owens any problems.
Owens has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Owens sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Sakay has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Owens has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
Owens tries to stall but Sakay uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Sakay is trying to pull guard but Owens has him pressed against the cage.

Long Owens has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Macario Sakay.

Owens has control of Sakay's left arm, preventing Sakay from doing any damage.
Sakay trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sakay throws a big right hand that misses.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Owens holds on and takes a little breather.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Long Owens.

Owens pushes Sakay up against the cage in a clinch.
Nice body punch from Owens.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Owens tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Owens's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Sakay is fighting to break Owens's control of his arms but Owens is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Sakay throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Owens preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Sakay won't allow Owens to sweep him here.
Sakay throws a big right hand that misses.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sakay accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Sakay postures up in Owens's guard and throws a big left but Owens blocks it.

Owens pulls Sakay in close to prevent any damage.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Owens is on top in guard.
Owens will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Owens slips nicely into half guard, despite the strikes coming from Sakay.
Still in half guard, Owens seems content to control.
Sakay is trying to stand back up but Owens is controlling him
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Sakay throws a sloppy strike from the bottom. He's now off balance and Owens manages to pass to side control.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sakay throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.
Owens avoids the strikes from the bottom by Sakay.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

and Owens counters with a good, hard body kick but Sakay shrugs it off.

Owens closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Owens wants to stand up but Sakay has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Sakay walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

Owens has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Sakay uses from the top position.

Long Owens showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Owens has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
