PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Waraporn Thidawat (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alex Smith will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Waraporn Thidawat!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Alex Smith!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Thidawat as he avoids it easily.

Smith moves into the clinch successfully.
Smith has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Thidawat avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Smith wants to take the fight to the mat but Thidawat manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Waraporn Thidawat has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alex Smith.
Thidawat is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Smith is defending well.
Thidawat is trying to drag Smith to the mat but Smith just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Thidawat changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Smith fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Smith's coach down at Tōshi was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Smith's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Thidawat tries to clinch but Smith is having none of it.

Smith closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Thidawat to the mat! Thidawat manages to get full guard.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Thidawat is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Smith is controlling him.
Thidawat is breathing heavily.
Thidawat thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Thidawat looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smith is one step ahead there.
Smith must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Alex Smith.

Smith shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Thidawat's guard.

Thidawat is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Smith defends well.

Smith wants to control from the top but Thidawat keeps moving.

Smith got a little sloppy there for a moment and Thidawat has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Smith has managed to get both his arms back between Thidawat's legs - danger averted.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Smith thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Smith trying to control but Thidawat is working from the bottom.
Thidawat is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Thidawat wants to stand but Smith is controlling the position.
Smith loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Smith is looking to stand up but Thidawat won't let him.
Smith wants to control from the top but Thidawat keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Alex Smith.
Thidawat stuffs the takedown.

Thidawat shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Smith pinned against the cage. Smith gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Smith changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Thidawat looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Thidawat tries to improve position but can't.

Smith decides to stand back up.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Smith throws a head kick but Thidawat moves out of range.
Smith dives in for a single leg takedown but Thidawat sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Smith turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Smith manages to end up in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Smith dominated that round.
That's time! Thidawat's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Smith closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Thidawat quickly recovers to half guard.
Smith wants to free his trapped foot but Thidawat is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Smith tries to stand and escape but Thidawat is controlling the position.
Thidawat moves into full guard.
Smith trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Smith is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Thidawat is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Smith is aware though and is defending well.
Smith would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Thidawat wants to stand but Smith is controlling the position.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Smith stops Thidawat from standing up.

Thidawat has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Smith can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith pushes down on Thidawat's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Smith is thwarting Thidawat's attempts to control the position.

Thidawat pushes Smith off and gets back to his feet.

Smith darts in and clinches Thidawat up against the cage.

Smith is trying to trip Thidawat. He has hold of a leg but Thidawat is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Smith persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Smith slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Thidawat might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Thidawat is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Smith is controlling him.
Smith chips away with some ground and pound.
Smith pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Thidawat is keeping the position for now.

Thidawat escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Smith slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Thidawat keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Thidawat. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Smith avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Thidawat wants to stand up but Smith is controlling him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Thidawat's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Smith fails with the takedown.
Thidawat closes this distance looking for a takedown but Smith circles away.
Smith tries to bum rush Thidawat with a series of wild strikes but Thidawat uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Smith throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Thidawat's waist but Thidawat gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Smith off to one side.
Thidawat shoots in looking for a takedown. Smith tries to sprawl out of it but Thidawat keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Smith manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Smith moves into the clinch successfully.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Thidawat has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Smith clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Smith trying to control the hands but Thidawat won't let him.
Smith wants to escape the position.
Smith manages to reverse the position and now he's in Thidawat's guard. Nice work there by Smith.
Thidawat has a closed guard, preventing Smith from standing up.
Thidawat wants to sweep here but Smith controlling him for the moment.

Smith lands a couple of elbows.
Thidawat wants to sweep but no luck.
Smith is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Thidawat lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Smith!

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Waraporn Thidawat.
Well Smith has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
