PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between George Palmer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Palmer comes to the cage accompanied by Sans Pression - Numero 1. Matt Hughes told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, George Palmer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matt Hughes!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Chris Downing and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Palmer falls off balance throwing a combination
and Hughes counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Palmer tries for a takedown but Hughes circles away easily

and Hughes counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Hughes.
Palmer is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Hughes is defending well.

Palmer tightens his grip and picks Hughes up, before dumping him to the ground. Hughes manages to land in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Palmer stands and throws Hughes's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Hughes tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Palmer wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Palmer tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Palmer has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Palmer definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Palmer is staying tight to Hughes's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Hughes is trying to improve his position.

Palmer is looking to take a break and control but Hughes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Palmer thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Well, if Palmer is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Palmer tries to pass to full mount but Hughes defends it.

Palmer is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Hughes's shoulder. That is not cool.
Hughes is trying to get back to half guard.
The referee asks Palmer politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Palmer prefers to stall for the moment though.

Palmer remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Palmer is looking to take a break and control but Hughes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Hughes parries the strikes from Palmer easily there. Palmer is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Hughes to escape.

Palmer is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Hughes has escaped the position, nice work there.
Hughes is looking to reverse the position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Palmer tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Palmer has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Hughes moves out of range of the body kick from Palmer.
Hughes has tried to improve his agility in the runup to this fight.
Palmer closes this distance looking for a takedown but Hughes circles away.
Palmer shoots in for a takedown but Hughes shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
George Palmer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hughes shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Palmer but Palmer pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Palmer is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Hughes.

Palmer is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Hughes will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Palmer, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
