Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kazushi Sakuraba (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Charles Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kazushi Sakuraba!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Charles Smith!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Sakuraba shoots in but no luck this time.
Sakuraba fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Smith avoids it really well and circles away.
Smith lands with a kick to the ribs.
A head kick from Smith lands but Sakuraba takes it in his stride.
Sakuraba tries to score a power double leg takedown but Smith sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Sakuraba somewhat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kazushi Sakuraba. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sakuraba shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Smith as he jumps to the side.
Smith connects with a high kick.
Nice takedown defense from Smith. No joy for Sakuraba on that attempt.
Sakuraba takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Smith breaks from the clinch.
Sakuraba closes this distance looking for a takedown but Smith circles away.
Smith throws a head kick that looked like it stung.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Smith has Sakuraba up against the cage in a clinch.

Smith breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Kazushi Sakuraba seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sakuraba on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Smith scores with a spinning back kick!
Charles Smith is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Smith throws a sloppy head kick and Sakuraba moves out of range easily.
Smith throws a head kick but Sakuraba moves out of range.
Smith moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Sakuraba has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Smith.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Sakuraba is defended easily by Smith.
Smith scores with the left hand. Sakuraba knows he should have avoided that one.
Smith thows a body kick. Sakuraba tries to catch it but that hurt him.
Sakuraba darts in looking for a takedown but Smith gets double underhooks and turns Sakuraba into the cage.

Smith breaks from the clinch.
Smith's coach down at Body Pain_12elite_599$+VM was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Smith's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sakuraba avoids the head kick by Smith.
Sakuraba looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Nice body kick there by Smith.
Smith plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Sakuraba throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Smith was covering up waiting for the punch and Sakuraba finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Smith wants to improve his position but instead Sakuraba has moved into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sakuraba perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Smith is not content to let Sakuraba control the position.

Smith looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Sakuraba controlling the action here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sakuraba wants to take a breather but Smith is having none of it.

Kazushi Sakuraba has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Smith clinches with his opponent.
Smith stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Sakuraba gets control of Smith's arms and successfully pulls guard. Sakuraba will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Smith trying to control but Sakuraba is working from the bottom.

Sakuraba looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Sakuraba keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.

Sakuraba has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Smith can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Smith has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Sakuraba to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Smith is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Sakuraba pulls down on the head and he's put Smith to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:26 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Kazushi Sakuraba!
