PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Joshua Downs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Adam Evans (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Joshua Downs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Adam Evans!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Jeff Smith and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice takedown defense from Evans. No joy for Downs on that attempt.
Evans rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Downs moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Evans shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Downs manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Downs working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Evans.
Evans trying to control the position from guard on top but Downs is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Evans wants to get up but he can't break Downs's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Evans passes into half guard.
Downs avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Evans.
Evans wants to pass the guard but Downs is defending well.
Evans is trying to control the action in half guard but Downs is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Evans is controlling the pace.
Downs wants to improve his position but Evans is controlling well.
Evans not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Downs trying to control but Evans postures up.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Adam Evans hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Evans drives through and clinches with Downs against the cage.

Downs manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Downs really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Evans is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Downs is pulling down on Evans's head to control his posture.
Evans would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Downs knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Evans on the ground.
Downs keeping full guard, as Evans tries to pass.

Evans wants to get up but he can't break Downs's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Evans advances position into side control!
Evans in side control, throwing shots but Downs defends.

Evans looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Downs tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Evans wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Evans fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Evans wants to lay and pray for a moment but Downs keeps working.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Evans scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Downs to see if he's OK.
Evans moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Downs takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Downs wants to control but Evans postures up.
The strikes coming from Evans are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Adam Evans dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Evans shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Downs manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Evans wants to control from the top but Downs keeps moving.
Downs is trying to keep Evans in close.
Evans sitting in guard, not really doing much.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Evans drives through and clinches with Downs against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Evans jumps guard.
Evans lands a good elbow from the bottom.
Evans has a closed guard, preventing Downs from standing up.
Downs won't allow Evans to get back to his feet.

Evans has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Downs doesn't defend quickly enough and Evans has managed to lock this one up! Can Downs escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Evans on a fantastic submission victory.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:52 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Adam Evans!
