PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gunner Harris (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Billy Hummel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gunner Harris!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Billy Hummel!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Paul Gruel and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hummel with a hook.
Harris scores with a hook to the body. Hummel takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Harris looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Hummel is fending him off so far but Harris persists. Nope, Hummel circles away and we're back to standing.
Hummel scores with a one two! Harris had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Hummel cracks Harris with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Hummel rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Harris moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Harris misses with a double jab
letting Hummel counter with a right hand.
Harris with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Hummel to score with a decent uppercut.
Hummel's coach down at Valhalla:NY GYM was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Hummel's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Hummel fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Harris throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Hummel was covering up waiting for the punch and Harris finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Harris tries to stand but Hummel is controlling from the bottom.

Harris won't allow Hummel to get back to his feet.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Harris closes the distance and clinches.
Hummel is trying to break free.

Harris has hold of one of Hummel's legs. Hummel is fighting the takedown attempt but Harris gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Harris looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Hummel really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Harris. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Harris has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Gunner Harris.

Hummel drops Harris with a nice combination! Hummel dives into Harris's guard, looking to finish!


Harris is rocked!


It looks like Gunner Harris has been cut.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Harris is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Hummel must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Billy Hummel wasn't active enough on the ground.
Harris avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Hummel throws a big overhand right that connects, sending Harris tumbling to the canvas!
Oh Harris is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Harris seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

Harris tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Hummel throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Harris works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Hummel wants to get up but he can't break Harris's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Hummel wants to control from the top but Harris keeps moving.
Harris seems to have got his legs back now.
Harris pulls Hummel in close to prevent any damage.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Harris walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Hummel swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Harris fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Hummel to the ground. Harris is now in Hummel's guard.
Harris won't allow Hummel to get back to his feet.

Harris prevents Hummel from getting back to his feet.
Harris has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Hummel is proving hard to escape from.
Harris is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Gunner Harris has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Hummel pulls out of a head kick attempt.
A slow jab from Harris misses its intended target.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Billy Hummel dominated that round.

Hummel drops Harris with a right and a left! Hummel comes rushing in but Harris regains his composure and manages to keep Hummel in guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Harris bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Hummel's guard.

Hummel is looking to stand up but Harris isn't so interested in that idea.
Harris is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Hummel. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Harris moves into full mount! Hummel won't be happy about that!

Harris is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Hummel to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Hummel shrugs it off.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Harris has taken the fight to the clinch.
Hummel tries to pull guard but Harris won't allow it.

Harris slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Harris seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Hummel for as long as he can get away with.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Gunner Harris.

Harris tries to bum rush Hummel with a series of wild strikes but Hummel uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Harris shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Harris was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Gunner Harris overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Harris's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Harris bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Hummel is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Harris asserts his dominance and retains side control.

And that's the end of the fight!
Gunner Harris showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Harris has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
