PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tony Jaa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Jericho (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tony Jaa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jack Jericho!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Roger Salmon and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A low kick from Jericho misses
and Jaa counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Jaa scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Jericho dives in and grabs Jaa's left leg, looking for a takedown. Jaa pushes down on Jericho's head and hops out.

Jericho throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Jaa tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Jericho is in Jaa's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Jericho working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Jaa not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Jericho slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Jericho lands a couple of digs.
Jaa can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Jericho controls the pace.
Jaa knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Jericho on the ground.

Jaa closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jaa distracts Jericho with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Jaa wants to control from the top but Jericho keeps moving.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Jericho bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Jaa's guard.
Jaa is trying to keep Jericho in close.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Tony Jaa wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Jericho, right into the meat.
Jack Jericho seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jaa avoids the body shot from Jericho.

Jericho shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Jericho thows a huge punch but Jaa dodges it nicely.

Jaa on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Jaa tries to get out of the position.
Jericho seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Jaa is striking from the bottom but he's now found himself mounted! Oh dear - not enough focus on defense there.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jericho breaks from Jaa's wrist control and lands an elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Jericho gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Jaa.
Jericho misses with a takedown attempt - Jaa sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Jaa connects with a right hand. Jericho shakes it off.
Jericho tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jaa sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Jericho somewhat.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Jaa enables Jericho to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Jaa manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Jaa wants to sweep but no luck.
Jericho throwing strikes from guard but Jaa blocks nicely.
Jericho throws a big right hand that misses.

Jaa can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Jericho controls the pace.
Jericho wants to control from the top but Jaa keeps moving.
Jericho throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Jaa works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Jaa wants to control the position but Jericho says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

Jaa leaves Jericho with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

A punch lands to the side of Jericho 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Jaa tests Jericho's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Jericho fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Jaa avoids it really well and circles away.

Jaa shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Connects with an elbow from the bottom, proving to the judges that he's still active off his back.
Jack Jericho has got the better of the ground game so far.
Jaa in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Jericho is trying to control the position but Jaa postures up.

Jericho is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Jaa is staying active underneath Jericho, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Jericho wants to lay and pray for a moment but Jaa keeps working.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Still in half guard, Jericho seems content to control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Jack Jericho wasn't active enough on the ground.

and Jaa counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Jaa keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Jericho's head.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Jaa accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Jack Jericho will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Jericho throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.

Jericho will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Jericho takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Jericho throws a low kick but Jaa moves out of range easily.
Jaa connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.

Jericho gets caught flat footed, as Jaa shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Jericho manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Jaa manages to get himself to full guard.
Jaa wants to stand but Jericho is controlling the position.
Jack Jericho is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Jaa is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Jericho tries to free his leg and advance position but Jaa is retaining full guard.

Jaa looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Jericho puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Jericho is taking a breather. Jaa says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Jericho's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Jaa connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Jericho shoots in looking for a takedown. Jaa tries to sprawl out of it but Jericho keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Jaa manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Jericho on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

Jericho misses with a kick to the body.
Jaa is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Jericho tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Jaa is able to avoid easily.
Tony Jaa has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Jericho shoots for a double leg takedown but Jaa sprawls well. He's pushed Jericho's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Tony Jaa has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jack Jericho.

Jaa shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Jericho napping and manages to drive through into side control!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Jaa goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Jericho has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Jaa but great work by Jericho.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Jaa on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Jericho slips into full mount, dodging the strikes by Jaa.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Tony Jaa.
I think Jericho has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
