PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jimmy Karl (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lex Layser (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Jimmy Karl!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Lex Layser!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Colin Fotheringham and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Karl is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Layser tries a low kick but Karl avoids it.
Layser misses with a hook.
Karl looks to clinch

and Layser counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Karl is adopting a defensive guard.
Layser throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Layser trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Karl manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Layser looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Karl slips nicely into half guard.
Karl wants to control but Layser is keeping him busy.
Karl wants to pass the guard but Layser is defending well.

Layser has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Karl is working away from the top position though.

Layser is holding on to half guard well.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Karl tries to clinch up.
Layser moves forwards but Karl connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Karl tries to clinch there but Layser circles away.
Layser throws an overhand right that lands on Karl's shoulder, as Karl tries to avoid the shot.
A left and a right from Layser both land. Nice combination.


It looks like Jimmy Karl has been cut.

Layser moves in looking to clinch but Karl pushes him off.
Jimmy Karl seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Layser rushes Karl and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Karl looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Karl throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.

Layser lands a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Karl keeping full guard, as Layser tries to pass.

Karl seems keen to control Layser's posture.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Karl looking for a sweep. Not yet Karl, not yet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

That's time! Karl's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

enabling Layser to counter with a crisp jab.
Layser wants to clinch up but Karl keeps it at a distance.
Karl throws a jab but it's blocked by Layser.
Karl is looking to clinch but Layser is avoiding it.
Layser lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Karl throws a big shot that misses.
Karl scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Layser swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Layser is looking to clinch.
Layser avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Layser closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Karl misses with some punches.
Karl has a couple of punches blocked by Layser.
Karl lands with a right to the head.
A shot in the inside from Karl.
Karl is trying to maintain a safe position but Layser gets an underhook and turns Karl into the cage.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Layser.

Karl swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Layser has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Karl avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Layser changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Karl fights it off and pushes away nicely.

A telegraphed right hand from Karl misses the target.
Karl with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Layser to score with a decent uppercut.
Jimmy Karl is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Layser shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Jimmy Karl has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Lex Layser.

Karl pulls Layser in close to prevent any damage.

Karl looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Layser missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Layser trying to control the position from guard on top but Karl is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Layser passes into half guard.

Layser wants to work for an arm triangle but Karl is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Layser seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Karl does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
My spies in Ironfist Athletics inform me that Layser has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Karl moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Karl is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Layser trying to control from the bottom.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Karl is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Lex Layser showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Layser is stalling here. Karl is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Layser seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Karl has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Karl looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Layser is avoiding damage well.
Layser gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Layser is staying active underneath Karl, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Karl is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Layser is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Karl is pressing down on Layser's thigh, looking to free his foot. Layser is holding on for now.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Lex Layser is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Layser is keen to just control but Karl is a slippery customer.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Lex Layser was stalling too much, according to the referee.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Layser is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Jimmy Karl has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Let's hope that Layser has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Karl is striking off his back. Layser thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.

Lex Layser comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Layser has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
