PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Cody Funke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Orion Contras (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Funke's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, never gonna stop. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 21 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Cody Funke!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Orion Contras!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Micheangelo Fripello and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Contras clinches.
Funke taking a breather.
Contras is pressed up against the cage. Funke has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Contras down to the mat. Contras avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Funke is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Contras.
Funke has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Funke stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Funke wants it to stay on the feet.

Contras gets in close and instigates a clinch.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Funke goes for a takedown in the clinch but Contras prevents it.

Funke manages to break the clinch.

Contras forces Funke back against the cage and clinches.
Contras is defending well against a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cody Funke. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Contras goes for a takedown attempt but Funke pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Contras moves into the clinch.

Funke is trying to push Contras away but Contras has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Contras takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Funke.
Funke misses with a body punch.
Contras prevents Funke from breaking the clinch.
Contras's coach down at Jef Li's MMA(13 coaches, 49 cap) was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Contras's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Funke looking to stall.

Contras manages to break the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Funke misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Funke lands a nice looking body shot.
Funke stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Funke wants it to stay on the feet.
Funke just misses with a punch to the body.
Nice uppercut lands for Funke. That snapped Contras's head back.
Funke jabs Contras to the body, keeping him at a distance.
No luck for Contras with that takedown attempt.
Funke misses with a body shot.
Funke scores with a body shot.
Funke throws a series of punches but Contras moves out of range.
Funke avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Contras doesn't manage to clinch there - Funke circles away.
Cody Funke seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Funke dodges the punch combination from Contras.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Contras throws a right and a left that both miss.
Funke walks into a left hand.
Contras ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Funke lands a nice shot to the body.

Funke fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Contras sprawls well initially but Funke persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Funke trying to control the pace.
Contras is trying to stand up here but Funke is controlling him well.
Contras wants to improve his position but Funke is controlling well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Funke takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Well, if Funke is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Contras avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Funke.
Funke throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Funke looks to land a strike but Contras avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Funke slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Contras utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Funke looking to sit in guard and control but Contras gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Contras wants to pass the guard but Funke is keeping the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Funke looking to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cody Funke dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Contras looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Contras really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Funke. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Funke manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Contras manages to get himself to full guard.
Funke tries to free his leg and advance position but Contras is retaining full guard.
Contras wants to stand but Funke is controlling the position.
Funke stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Contras swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Funke content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Contras looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Funke is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Funke working some strikes from top position.
Funke chips away with some ground and pound.
Contras throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Funke makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Funke with a flurry of punches that miss.

Contras is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Funke is aware though and is defending well.
Funke throwing strikes but missing.
Contras is trying to hold Funke in close to prevent damage but Funke has managed to pass into half guard.
Funke stops Contras from getting back to his feet.
Funke working over Contras with some ground and pound. Contras looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Contras is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Funke seems to be working for a kimura but Contras defends the submission attempt.
Funke looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Contras with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Funke landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Funke working over Contras with some ground and pound. Contras looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Funke connects with a nice short shot to Contras's temple.


Contras is rocked!
Well, if Funke is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Contras is still in real trouble! Can Funke finish him?
Funke is nestled in close to Contras, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Funke with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Funke is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Contras trying to hold on to Funke's head to control him but Funke postures up.
Funke lands a big elbow - Contras is out of it! He's waving his arms around but his eyes are closed and he's not intelligently defending himself - the ref has no choice but to jump in and stop the fight! This one is in the books! A TKO win for Funke!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Cody Funke!
An out of breath Cody Funke thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
