PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Leonardo Barrera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Josh Richards (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Leonardo Barrera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Josh Richards!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Alexandre Firmino and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Richards shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Barrera napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Barrera can't do much from the bottom here.
Barrera regains half guard, as Richards was trying to land strikes.
Richards throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Barrera wants to get back to full guard but Richards has mounted him!
Richards wants to get back to his feet but Barrera is holding on tight.
Richards trying to control but Barrera is having none of it.

Richards unloads with some shots from mount but Barrera bucks and avoids them well.
Barrera knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Richards on the ground.

Richards is looking to stand up but Barrera isn't so interested in that idea.

Barrera working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Richards's head.
Barrera throws a big elbow that misses.
Richards wants to control but Barrera passes easily into half guard.
Richards is looking for a sweep. Barrera is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Richards has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Richards trying to keep a closed guard but Barrera is proving a slippery customer.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Josh Richards.

Richards changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Barrera looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Barrera tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Richards wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Barrera could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Richards wants to pass to mount but Barrera is defending the position.
Barrera preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Josh Richards was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Barrera throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Richards tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Barrera is in Richards's guard.
Richards has Barrera pulled in close to control his posture.

Richards has his foot on Barrera's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Barrera works his way back into a safe position though.

Josh Richards showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!



Richards drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Richards slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Richards tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Richards has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Richards goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Barrera rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Richards's guard! Nice work there by Barrera!

Well Richards has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
