The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Atkinson darts in looking for a takedown but Canavan gets double underhooks and turns Atkinson into the cage.
Atkinson could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Atkinson is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Canavan to keep the fight standing.
Atkinson has Canavan pressed against the cage, preventing Canavan from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Atkinson tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Canavan smiles and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Russ Atkinson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Atkinson misses with a takedown attempt - Canavan sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Canavan comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
A nice combination there by Canavan.

It looks like Russ Atkinson has been cut.
Atkinson fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Canavan throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Atkinson.
Canavan cracks Atkinson with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Atkinson avoids a punch combination nicely.
Atkinson will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

letting Canavan counter with a right hand.
Atkinson shoots for a takedown but Canavan saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Atkinson takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Atkinson takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Canavan lands a nice shot to the body.
Atkinson is breathing heavily.
Canavan works Atkinson's body with a nice hook.
Canavan feints with a jab and clips Atkinson right behind the ear with a massive overhand right! Atkinson is sent crashing into the canvas and Canavan leaps in for the kill! Atkinson tries to get to his feet but Canavan is just battering him from every conceivable angle. The ref decides that Atkinson is in need of a savior and steps in!
