PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ben Stien (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and How Long (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Long has chosen Onra - One For The Wu as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ben Stien!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, How Long!
The judges for this bout are Darius Henderson, Hugh Johnson and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Stien bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Long manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Stien is trying to stand up here but Long is controlling him well.
Stien definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Stien is looking to improve his position.
Long is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Stien pushes Long off looking to stand but Long dives back in and keeps control.
Long is looking to advance position but Stien won't allow it.
Stien keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Stien won't allow Long to pass to mount.

Long controlling the action here.
Long looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Long trying to control from Stien's half guard. Stien has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Stien not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Stien looking to hit a scissor sweep but Long is one step ahead there.
Long stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stien swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Long sitting in guard here, content to control.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Stien looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.

Stien scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Long can't do much from the bottom here.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Long is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Stien off and has taken his back!
Long gets his hands free as Stien looks to control.

Long looking for the RNC.
Stien wants to control his opponent's hands but Long gets his hands free.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Long tries to get the hooks in deep but Stien pushed the leg off.
Stien tries to escape but Long has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Long controlling the positon.

Stien tries to escape the position.
Long slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Stien is keeping busy.

Stien defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Long's arms.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Long trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Stien doesn't escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

How Long dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Stien swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Stien closes the distance and pushes Long back into the cage.
Long lands a nice uppercut.
Stien is working for takedown but Long is calmly controlling the position for now.
Stien blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Long gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Stien.
Still in the clinch, Long scores with a nice short uppercut.
Stien tries for a takedown but Long manages to get underhooks.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ben Stien. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Long works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Stien takes a shot to the head.


It looks like Ben Stien has been cut.
Stien is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Long trying to stall but Stien improves his position.
Stien wants a takedown.

Stien has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Long after a bit of a struggle.
Long misses with a hook from the clinch.
Long is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.
A short uppercut from Long.

Stien pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

and Long decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Stien's guard.
Stien wants to control but Long passes easily into half guard.
Stien is in trouble now - Long has advanced to mount!

Long goes for an armbar but Stien turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Stien.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Stien trying to control but Long is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Stien loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Stien accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Stien throws a strike but Long rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Stien tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Stien keeping moving, preventing Long from controlling successfully.
Long stays in close to Stien's body and controls the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Stien is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Long wants to control from the top but Stien keeps moving.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by How Long.
Stien goes for a double leg but Long avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Long continues to drive forward.

Long gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Stien is trying to stand.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Stien trying to hold on to Long's head to control him but Long postures up.

Long seems to be working for a kimura but Stien defends the submission attempt.
Long works his way into side control.
Long wants to control for a moment but Stien uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Stien wants to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

How Long showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Ben Stien's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Stien fails with the takedown

and Long holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Long leaning his opponent against the cage.
Long makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Long tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Stien's elbow.
Stien has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Long after a bit of a struggle.

Stien escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Stien on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Long displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Stien.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ben Stien. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Stien has a takedown stuffed.
Long ducks under a wild hook from Stien.

Stien tries to move into range but Long moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Long scores with a decent looking hook.
Stien shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Long pinned against the cage. Long gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Stien gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Long tries to throw a body punch but Stien avoids it by throwing Long back against the cage.
Long lands a right hand.
Long blocking some punches.

Stien has Long pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Stien pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Long tumbling to the mat - Stien dives into Long's guard.

How Long is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Stien trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Stien accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Stien sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Long's guard.
Stien not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Stien sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Long defending well though.
How Long has got the better of the ground game so far.
Long trying to control from the bottom.
Long desperately trying to maintain half guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up. How Long was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Stien connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Long lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Stien backs up against the cage.
Stien walks into a jab.
Stien swats away the attempt to clinch by Long.
Stien changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Long tries to avoid it but Stien manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Long to the ground. Long escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Stien misses the shot to the body.
Stien will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Stien drives through and clinches with Long against the cage.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Stien.
Long blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Long is pressed up against the cage. Stien has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Long down to the mat. Long avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Long scores with a nice strike.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Long connects with a body shot.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Stien throws a lazy uppercut

and Long counters by clinching up.

Stien breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Ben Stien has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd cheers as Long lands an impressive looking overhand right. Stien doesn't seem phased though.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to How Long.
Well Long has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, How Long was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
