PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bob Sappy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Dragon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bob Sappy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Dragon!
The judges for this bout are Chris Dean, Eliza Hachem and Francis DeMontford.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sappy forces Dragon back against the cage and clinches.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Sappy just misses with a elbow thrown towards Dragon's brow.
Dragon drops down looking for an ankle pick but Sappy pulls his leg out and moves away.
Sappy stuffs the takedown attempt from Dragon. Dragon gets slowly back to his feet.

Sappy scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Dragon felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Sappy in particular looking to stall.

Sappy wants to control from the top but Dragon keeps moving.
Sappy wants to get up but he can't break Dragon's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Sappy controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sappy wants to pass the guard but Dragon is keeping the position.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Dragon manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

Sappy gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Dragon is looking to escape.
Sappy scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Sappy prevents Dragon from improving his position.
Sappy content to control rather than advance.
Dragon wants to improve his position but Sappy is controlling well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Dragon looks like he's trying to stand up.
Sappy will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Sappy is looking for a kimura here.
Dragon has hold of Sappy's hands but Sappy slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Dragon wants to get back to his feet.
Sappy trying to pass the guard but Dragon defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Dragon stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Dragon wants it to stay on the feet.

Dragon wants to take the fight to the mat but Sappy manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Dragon tries to circle away but Sappy has him pinned against the cage.
Dragon tries to throw a body punch but Sappy avoids it by throwing Dragon back against the cage.

Sappy is trying to keep Dragon in close.

Dragon passes Sappy's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Sappy avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Dragon.
Bob Sappy overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Sappy makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Sappy gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Dragon to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Dragon sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Sappy's guard.

Dragon is working for a kimura but Sappy is defending it quite comfortably.
Dragon is trying to control the action in half guard but Sappy is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Dragon is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Dragon maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Sappy could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Dragon has cracked it and Sappy is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Dragon!
