PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Woodrow Higgins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jesse James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). James is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: iPhone - Ringtone (MetroGnome Remix) . I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jesse James was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Woodrow Higgins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jesse James!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Matheus Silva and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

James looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Higgins really is a fat lump.

James is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Higgins is working an open guard so James takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Higgins enables James to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Higgins manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
James not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Higgins is working an open guard so James takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

James shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Higgins's guard.
James is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Higgins is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



James drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Higgins might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Higgins accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Higgins got a little sloppy there for a moment and James has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Higgins has managed to get both his arms back between James's legs - danger averted.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
James is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jesse James.
James's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and James duly obliges.
Higgins changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. James tries to avoid it but Higgins manages to keep hold of a leg and drag James to the ground. James escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

James dives in and scores a takedown into Higgins's guard.
James is breathing heavily.

Higgins had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. James defends it easily.
James tries to free his leg and advance position but Higgins is retaining full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jesse James showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Higgins tries to close the distance and clinch but James swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

James throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Higgins was covering up waiting for the punch and James finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Higgins has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but James can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Higgins is looking for a triangle but James pushes his legs off easily.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
James throwing strikes from guard but Higgins blocks nicely.
James's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Jesse James has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

James scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
James slows the pace down.

Higgins is not content to let James control the position.

James tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no James has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Higgins is trying to escape the position but James is controlling the position.
Jesse James has got the better of the ground game so far.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

James decides to stand up, so the ref orders Higgins to his feet.
Higgins tries to close the distance and clinch up but James swats him away and circles back towards the center.

James scores with a takedown into Higgins's guard.
James trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jesse James comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well James has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, Jesse James was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
