The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

De Souza is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Carney still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Carney has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Carney is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but De Souza is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

De Souza feints and as Carney raises his hands in defense, De Souza changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Carney is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. De Souza is defending well though. Carney let's go of the attempt for now.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
De Souza throws a push kick but Carney slaps the foot to one side.
De Souza misses with a head kick.
De Souza tries to score a power double leg takedown but Carney sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten De Souza somewhat.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Ferdinand Carney.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Carney, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
