PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jewell Geoffrey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Saulo Correia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jewell Geoffrey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Saulo Correia!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Edson Gomes and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Correia fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Correia clinches.
Correia goes for a takedown attempt but Geoffrey pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Correia tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Geoffrey manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Correia moves out of range as Geoffrey throws a body kick.
Correia dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Horrible takedown attempt by Geoffrey or perhaps it was just good defense by Correia, which made it look bad.

Correia takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A right-left combo lands from Correia.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Correia enables Geoffrey to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Correia manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Geoffrey slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Correia is looking for a sweep.

Geoffrey is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Correia knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

and Geoffrey counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Geoffrey perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Geoffrey has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Correia wants to control the action here but instead Geoffrey manages to pass to full mount!

Geoffrey landing strikes from the mount and Correia is in trouble!

Correia takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Geoffrey jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Correia manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Correia tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.

Geoffrey's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Correia is desperately trying to improve his position but Geoffrey has a good base and remains in mount.
Geoffrey lands a heavy elbow.

Geoffrey looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Correia is fending him off so far but Geoffrey persists. Nope, Correia circles away and we're back to standing.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Geoffrey jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Correia walks away with a smile on his face. Geoffrey gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Correia lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

Geoffrey closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Geoffrey changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Correia fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Correia looks to land a combination but Geoffrey avoids it well.

Correia is looking to clinch but Geoffrey is avoiding it.

Geoffrey slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Geoffrey gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Saulo Correia seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Correia takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Correia throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Correia tries to clinch but Geoffrey moves away

and Geoffrey counters with a takedown into side control.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Geoffrey is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Correia's shoulder. That is not cool.
Jewell Geoffrey overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Correia is rocked!

Geoffrey decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Geoffrey drives through with a takedown into guard.
Correia is still in real trouble! Can Geoffrey finish him?
Geoffrey is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Geoffrey is stalling in the full guard.

Geoffrey thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Geoffrey is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Correia seems to have recovered his senses.

Correia wants to get back to his feet but Geoffrey is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Correia fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Geoffrey checks it well.
Geoffrey avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Geoffrey shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Correia's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!



Correia gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Geoffrey stands up from Correia's guard - Geoffrey perhaps looking for a knockout.

Geoffrey darts in and clinches Correia up against the cage.

Correia got a little sloppy there for a moment and Geoffrey has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Correia has managed to get both his arms back between Geoffrey's legs - danger averted.

Geoffrey had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Correia defends it easily.
Correia wants to get up but he can't break Geoffrey's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Correia drops back, looking for a kneebar! Geoffrey looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Geoffrey looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Geoffrey!

Correia takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Geoffrey decides to stand up, so the ref orders Correia to his feet.
Geoffrey displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Correia.

Correia throws a left and a right that both miss

and Geoffrey counters with a shoot takedown. Correia fights it but they end up in guard.
Geoffrey passes Correia's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Correia really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Geoffrey. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Geoffrey pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Saulo Correia has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Geoffrey is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Correia can do to turn this around?

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Correia can do anything to dispel that myth.

Geoffrey is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Correia to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Correia shrugs it off.
Geoffrey takes Correia's back.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Geoffrey lands a shot to the body.
Jewell Geoffrey is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
I really don't envy Correia right now.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Geoffrey, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
