PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kaji Maruo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Eddie Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Maruo comes into the arena with Avril Lavigne - Hello Kitty blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kaji Maruo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Eddie Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Shirou Masuda and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson connects with an inside leg kick.
Johnson fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Maruo has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Johnson stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Johnson wants it to stay on the feet.
Maruo moves in looking to clinch but Johnson pushes him off.
Maruo avoids the head kick by Johnson.

Maruo shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Maruo might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Maruo is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Johnson keeping moving, preventing Maruo from controlling successfully.
Johnson wants to stand up but Maruo is controlling him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Johnson is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Maruo is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Kaji Maruo.
Maruo misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Maruo throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.

Johnson buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
That kick from Johnson tenderised Maruo's leg. Maruo is trying to keep his angry face on.
Johnson lands a high kick!
Johnson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Johnson dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Maruo. That did some damage!
Maruo darts in looking for a takedown but Johnson gets double underhooks and turns Maruo into the cage.

Johnson manages to break the clinch.

Maruo feints and as Johnson raises his hands in defense, Maruo changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Johnson wants to stand and escape but Maruo is having none of it.
Johnson can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Maruo controls the pace.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

The ref stands the fighters back up. Kaji Maruo wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Johnson lands a nice leg kick that just misses Maruo's sensitive parts.
Johnson swats away the attempt to clinch by Maruo.
Johnson leaves Maruo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Maruo has managed to clinch.
Maruo looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Maruo lands a hook to the side of the head.

Maruo is trying to trip Johnson. He has hold of a leg but Johnson is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Maruo persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Maruo is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Maruo works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Johnson pushes Maruo off looking to stand but Maruo dives back in and keeps control.

Maruo content to control rather than advance.

Johnson kicks Maruo off and gets back to his feet.
Johnson looks winded!
Johnson fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Maruo has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Johnson finds it's way round the side to connect with Maruo's head.
Johnson throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Maruo shoots for a double leg takedown but Johnson sprawls well. He's pushed Maruo's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Maruo closes this distance looking for a takedown but Johnson circles away.

Maruo closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Maruo in side control, just content to control the action for now.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Maruo seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Johnson for as long as he can get away with.
Johnson is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Maruo is controlling him well.
Maruo is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Johnson will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Johnson felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Maruo lands a nice forearm strike.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Johnson wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Johnson seems a little lost for a moment, as Maruo dominates the positioning.
Maruo prevents Johnson from escaping the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fight stays on the outside here - Maruo looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Maruo changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Johnson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Kaji Maruo overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Maruo takes a little break here. Johnson wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Maruo is working Johnson over with some ground and pound from side control.
Johnson is trying to escape the position but Maruo is controlling the position.
Maruo is looking to take a break and control but Johnson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Johnson is letting Maruo control him for a moment.

Maruo is really struggling to control Johnson but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Johnson pushes Maruo away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Maruo gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Maruo is looking to take a break and control but Johnson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Johnson is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Maruo asserts his dominance and retains side control.
The referee asks Maruo politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Maruo prefers to stall for the moment though.

Johnson throws a right hand that Maruo ducks under and follows up with a left that Maruo also avoids with ease.
Johnson lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Maruo backs up against the cage.
Eddie Johnson is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Johnson is breathing heavily.

Maruo drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Maruo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Maruo controls from within his opponent's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Johnson can't keep his opponent in guard - Maruo advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Maruo is taking a breather. Johnson says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Maruo is looking to clinch but Johnson is avoiding it.
Maruo takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Maruo goes for a double leg but Johnson avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Johnson continues to drive forward.
Maruo's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Maruo has Johnson pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Maruo pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Johnson tumbling to the mat - Maruo dives into Johnson's guard.
Johnson wants to stand up but Maruo is controlling him.

Maruo misses with a few strikes there.
Johnson keeps the fight on the outside.
Johnson stalks Maruo and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Maruo's face. Maruo staggers backwards, shaken.
Johnson lands a high kick!
Maruo fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Johnson throws a head kick that Maruo semi-blocks.

Maruo has closed the distance and engaged Johnson in a clinch.
Johnson is trying to push Maruo away but Maruo has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Johnson wants to break free but Maruo has control.
Johnson can't break the clinch.
Still in the clinch, Maruo scores with a nice short uppercut.

Maruo's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Maruo shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Johnson defends it nicely.
Maruo blocks a head kick by Johnson.
Johnson lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Johnson tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Johnson defending well as Maruo loads up on a big left hand.
Maruo misses with a series of wild punches.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Johnson throws a head kick but Maruo moves out of range.
Maruo is looking to clinch but Johnson is avoiding it.
Maruo is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Maruo shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Johnson manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Eddie Johnson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kaji Maruo is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

I would just about give that final round to Eddie Johnson.
I think Maruo has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
