Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ellsworth Patton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jimmy Backlund (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jimmy Backlund is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ellsworth Patton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jimmy Backlund!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Jonathan Paton and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Patton closes the distance and clinches.

Patton decides to pull guard.
Backlund postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Patton looking for a sweep. Not yet Patton, not yet.
Backlund wants to get up but he can't break Patton's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Patton tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Patton can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Backlund controls the pace.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Backlund lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Backlund has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Patton is proving hard to escape from.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Patton can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Backlund controls the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Backlund closes the distance looking to clinch
and Patton cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Patton rushes Backlund and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Patton is fighting off a takedown attempt but Backlund is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Patton to the mat. Patton regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Patton is on top in guard.


Patton avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Patton got a little sloppy there for a moment and Backlund has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Patton has managed to get both his arms back between Backlund's legs - danger averted.

Backlund is looking for a triangle here but Patton uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Patton is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Backlund is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Backlund is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Patton is working for a kimura from half guard. He's really concentrating on the hold and it's allowed Backlund to slip a leg under and get back to full guard.

Backlund looking for subs off his back but Patton has passed one foot through into half guard.
Backlund is looking to improve his position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Backlund on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Backlund is looking to control Patton's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Backlund avoid being mounted?

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Backlund makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Backlund.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ellsworth Patton dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Patton shoots in and bounces Backlund off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Backlund escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Patton gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Backlund wants to stand and escape but Patton is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Patton missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Backlund throwing strikes off his back to little effect.

Backlund has momentary wrist control but Patton slips an elbow through the middle.
Patton content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Patton knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Backlund on the ground.

Backlund looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Patton passes into half guard.

Patton is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Backlund looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Patton is nestled in close to Backlund, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Patton is looking for a kimura but Backlund is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Patton to get the leverage.
Backlund is looking to control Patton's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Backlund avoid being mounted?

Backlund keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Patton not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Backlund fails with an attempt to clinch.
Backlund shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Backlund looks for a takedown but Patton sprawls well.

Patton shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Backlund napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Backlund is breathing heavily.
Backlund struggling a bit here.

Backlund is looking for a sweep.
Patton scores with a couple of short elbows.
Patton working the body and head with strikes.

Patton goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Backlund has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Patton but great work by Backlund.

Backlund tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Backlund misses with an attempted head punch from side control.

Ellsworth Patton dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Backlund gets caught napping as Patton dives in and scores a takedown. Backlund manages to retain guard.
Patton keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Backlund's head.

Ellsworth Patton overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Backlund wants to stand but Patton is controlling his posture from full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Backlund is pushing down on Patton's leg trying to pass to half guard. Patton is fighting to maintain full guard but Backlund has managed to sneak the leg through.

Backlund is working for a kimura but Patton is defending it quite comfortably.

Patton tries to roll over but Backlund keeps him under control.
Patton is refusing to be controlled, as Backlund sits in half guard.
Patton is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Backlund can do to turn this around?
Backlund is stalling here. Patton is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Backlund seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Patton has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Backlund tries to hold on but Patton postures up.

Patton goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Backlund turns into him and now he's in Patton's guard.
Patton is adopting a defensive guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Ellsworth Patton.
Well Patton has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
