PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Patrick Kane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos Astico (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Carlos Astico will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Patrick Kane!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Carlos Astico!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, William Peck and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Astico closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Astico gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Astico wants to pass to mount but Kane is defending the position.
Kane is looking for a sweep. Astico is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Kane looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Kane is looking to control Astico's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Kane avoid being mounted?
Kane keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Astico trying to control from half guard but Kane is working away.
Kane gets full guard.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Astico working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Astico trying to control the position from guard on top but Kane is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Astico postures up.
Kane bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Astico's guard.

Astico controls Kane momentarily but Kane frees himself.
Kane tries to free his leg and advance position but Astico is retaining full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Kane wants to control from the top but Astico keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Kane dodges the punch combination from Astico.

Kane closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Astico did well to prevent Kane getting side control.
Kane wants to control but Astico is keeping him busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kane is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Astico pushes Kane off looking to stand but Kane dives back in and keeps control.

Astico is pressing down on Kane's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Kane trying to control but Astico is working from the bottom.
Kane postures up.
Kane knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Astico on the ground.
Kane tries to free his leg and advance position but Astico is retaining full guard.
Kane would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Astico takes the fight into the clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Kane tries to score a body lock takedown but Astico shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Astico is trying to trip Kane. He has hold of a leg but Kane is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Astico persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Astico trying to control the position from guard on top but Kane is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kane wants to hit a switch here but Astico passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Kane there!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Astico working for a guillotine from mount but Kane is in no mood to give up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carlos Astico dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Astico decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Astico throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Carlos Astico has got the better of the ground game so far.
Kane is trying to control but can't.
Astico is keen to just control but Kane is a slippery customer.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kane controlling the position well.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Astico pivots, looking for a leg kick but Kane is out of range and Astico settles back down.
Astico goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Astico tries to clinch up

and Kane counters with a nice double leg into side control. Astico won't be happy with that.
Astico has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Kane takes a little break here. Astico wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Astico is working to avoid the ground and pound but Kane connects with a decent elbow.

Astico is looking for a sweep.

Kane tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Astico dodges the ground and pound from Kane.

Kane tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Kane has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Astico manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Kane is concentrating on defense, preventing Astico from advancing position.
Kane trying to control here.
Astico tries to stand but can't do so whilst Kane controls his leg.
Kane is looking for a sweep. Astico is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Kane is working hard here to advance position.
Astico wants to get back to his feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Astico slips a nice elbow through Kane's hands, connecting with Kane's forehead.

Kane is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Astico pulls his head out easily.
Astico content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Kane moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Kane is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Carlos Astico will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


A telegraphed takedown attempt from Kane is defended easily by Astico.
Astico lands with a kick to the temple. Kane shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Astico lands a leg kick that knocks Kane off balance momentarily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kane tries for a takedown but Astico sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Kane crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Astico - the referee stops the clock and Kane gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Astico. Kane manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Kane finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Astico throws a head kick but Kane moves out of range.
No luck for Kane with that takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Patrick Kane. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Astico leaves Kane with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Kane takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.

Astico closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Kane's guard.
Astico wanted to stand there but Kane had control of the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Kane is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Astico trying to control but Kane is working from the bottom.
Astico is looking to work some ground and pound but Kane has wrist control.
Kane is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Kane looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Astico trying to control but Kane is working from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Astico stuffs the takedown attempt from Kane. Kane gets slowly back to his feet.
Kane dives in for a single leg takedown but Astico sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Astico breaks the clinch.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Astico.

Astico wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kane keeps working.
Kane tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Kane is not content to let Astico control the position.
Patrick Kane has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Carlos Astico is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Carlos Astico comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Astico has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
