PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jimmy Snuka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Diego Sanchez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Snuka's entrance music is Superfly by Curtis Mayfield. A fine choice. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jimmy Snuka!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 35 - 16 - 2, fighting out of Montreal, Diego Sanchez!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Andrew Berry and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Snuka clinches with his opponent.
Sanchez misses with the head strike.

Snuka has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Sanchez uses from the top position.
Sanchez controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Snuka is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Snuka wants to pass to mount but Sanchez is defending the position.
Snuka is working hard here to advance position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sanchez keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Snuka missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Snuka thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Sanchez's head.
Snuka wants to free his trapped foot but Sanchez is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Snuka wants to control but Sanchez is keeping him busy.
Snuka throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Sanchez to regain full guard.
Sanchez is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Snuka slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Snuka wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sanchez keeps working.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Snuka tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Snuka tries to score with some ground and pound. Sanchez controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Snuka has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
You can see the frustration on Sanchez's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Snuka in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Sanchez gets back to half guard.
Snuka trying to advance position but Sanchez counters by regaining guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Snuka in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Snuka with a flurry of punches that miss.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Snuka wants to control from the top but Sanchez keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Sanchez connects with a body shot.
Sanchez slips a jab from Snuka.
Snuka connects with a nice looking jab.
Jimmy Snuka seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Snuka misses with a left hand
and Sanchez makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Snuka thows a left - swing and a miss!
Sanchez feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Snukas jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Sanchez stuffs the takedown.
Snuka shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Snuka tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Sanchez! But no joy.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Sanchez lands a big head kick that sends Snuka tumbling to the mat! Sanchez takes a step backwards and waves Snuka back to his feet - he wants the finish!


Snuka is rocked!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Sanchez throws an overhand right that has Snuka reeling! Sanchez follows up with more punches and Snuka is out cold! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:09 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Diego Sanchez! Diego Sanchez retains his lightweight title!
A victorious Diego Sanchez thanked his army of followers in his post fight interview, telling people to make sure they follow him on Twitter.
In defeat, Jimmy Snuka stepped up to the mic, saying 'What the hell just happened? Anyone get the license plate number off that truck?'.
