And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Toni Desu!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Desu closes the distance but Mcdaniel moves to the side

and Mcdaniel counters with a nice double leg into side control. Desu won't be happy with that.

Mcdaniel is trying to get an arm triangle but Desu is defending well.

Mcdaniel tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A lull in the action here as Mcdaniel stalls from top position.
Mcdaniel really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Desu is pushing Mcdaniel's head away, looking to escape. Mcdaniel manages to hold on to the position though.

Mcdaniel is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Desu is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Desu parries the strikes from Mcdaniel easily there. Mcdaniel is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Desu to escape.

Mcdaniel has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Desu wants to get back to his feet.
Mcdaniel cracks Desu with a big right hand but Desu just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Mcdaniel will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Mcdaniel goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Desu has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Mcdaniel but great work by Desu.
Mcdaniel is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Mcdaniel regains full guard. Nicely done.
Mcdaniel is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Mcdaniel is working for a kimura but Desu is defending it quite comfortably.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mcdaniel thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Desu tries to clinch

and Mcdaniel counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Mcdaniel thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Desu's head.

Mcdaniel seems to be looking for submissions.

Mcdaniel is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Mcdaniel looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Desu with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Desu is defending against the submission attempts here by Mcdaniel.
Desu really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mcdaniel. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Mcdaniel in particular looking to stall.

Mcdaniel in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Desu tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Mcdaniel!
