PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Renan Melo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gregor MCconnor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Melo comes to the cage accompanied by Fireball - Pitbull. Gregor MCconnor will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Renan Melo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Gregor MCconnor!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, James Atkins and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Melo throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Nice cross by MCconnor.
Melo has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
MCconnor darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
MCconnor lands a head shot.
MCconnor wants to clinch up but Melo keeps it at a distance.
MCconnor works the jab nicely.
MCconnor is looking to clinch.
Melo just misses with a punch to the body.
MCconnor tries to close the distance and clinch but Melo swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
MCconnor just misses with a punch to the body.
MCconnor's jab looks to have found its range, popping Melo under the eye.

and MCconnor counters by moving into the clinch.
Oh Melo is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
MCconnor is struggling to control the position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

MCconnor breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Melo keeps the fight on the outside.
Melo seems to have got his legs back now.
MCconnor moves to clinch but Melo breaks away

and Melo counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Melo.

Melo controlling from the top position.
Melo wants to control from the top but MCconnor keeps moving.
Melo is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
MCconnor keeping full guard, as Melo tries to pass.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Melo controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
MCconnor swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Melo tries to counter with a takedown but MCconnor is quick to defend against it.
MCconnor is looking to clinch but Melo is avoiding it.
MCconnor tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Melo blocks a head kick by MCconnor.
Melo appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Melo tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but MCconnor was well out of range. Poor timing from Melo.

MCconnor tries to clinch up but Melo circles away and keeps his distance.
Melo feinted with a counter takedown.
Melo throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Melo blocks a head kick by MCconnor.
Melo attempts a counter takedown but MCconnor avoids it well and moves away.
MCconnor tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Melo paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Melo feinted with a counter takedown.
Melo swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Gregor MCconnor is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
MCconnor tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Melo manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Melo throws a jab when MCconnor was well out of range.
MCconnor has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
MCconnor tries to clinch but Melo moves away

and Melo counters with a takedown into side control.
Melo just content to control the position.

Melo goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, MCconnor rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Melo's guard! Nice work there by MCconnor!

Melo working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. MCconnor doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. MCconnor manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Melo trying to keep a closed guard but MCconnor is proving a slippery customer.
MCconnor really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Melo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
MCconnor wanted to stand there but Melo had control of the position.
Melo is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Melo has his foot on MCconnor's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. MCconnor works his way back into a safe position though.

That was a close round but I would say that Renan Melo will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Melo takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
MCconnor tries to clinch up.
Melo feinted with a counter takedown.
MCconnor throws a head kick but Melo moves out of range.
Melo uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from MCconnor.
MCconnor tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Melo counters with a nice double leg into side control. MCconnor won't be happy with that.

Melo is trying to get an arm triangle but MCconnor is defending well.
Melo looking to control but instead MCconnor has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Melo is just content to waste time from the top position. MCconnor takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Melo slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Melo wants to control from the top but MCconnor keeps moving.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Melo seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
MCconnor tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Melo paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Melo appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Melo connects with a single shot there.
A jab from MCconnor finds it's way through Melo's defenses.

and Melo counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for MCconnor!
Melo is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt MCconnor will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

MCconnor seems a little lost for a moment, as Melo dominates the positioning.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Renan Melo overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
MCconnor is not content to let Melo control the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Melo goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, MCconnor has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Melo but great work by MCconnor.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! And we move into the final round!

Melo drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.

MCconnor closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Melo effectively controlling the action here.
MCconnor wants to break the clinch but can't.

MCconnor is trying to force a seperation but Melo has the dominant position.

MCconnor breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
MCconnor uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Melo.

Melo trying to control the position from guard on top but MCconnor is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Melo looking to sit in guard and control but MCconnor gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Melo is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Melo tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Renan Melo is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
MCconnor must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

MCconnor ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Melo moves away.
Melo throws a looping overhand right but MCconnor ducks down to avoid it.
MCconnor tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Melo appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
MCconnor closes the distance but Melo moves to the side

and Melo decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in MCconnor's guard.
Melo might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Melo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. MCconnor swivels though and keeps the full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Renan Melo.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Melo, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
