PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Viet Tran (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Albert Waldbauer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Viet Tran!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Albert Waldbauer!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tran shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Waldbauer as he jumps to the side.
Tran throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Waldbauer pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Tran back to the cage. Waldbauer follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Tran fails to land the takedown.
No joy there for Tran, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Tran looks to land a combination but Waldbauer avoids it well.
Waldbauer tries to clinch up.
Tran looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Despite the aggression on Waldbauer's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Tran swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Waldbauer scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Tran doesn't seem bothered though.
Waldbauer is looking to clinch but Tran is avoiding it.
Tran fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Viet Tran. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Tran misses with a double jab.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Waldbauer misses with a two punch combination.
Tran is looking to clinch but Waldbauer is avoiding it.

Tran closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Tran changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Waldbauer tries to avoid it but Tran manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Waldbauer to the ground. Waldbauer escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Waldbauer tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Tran shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Waldbauer sprawls well. Waldbauer wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Tran gets slowly back to his feet.
Tran really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...
Tran is breathing heavily.
Waldbauer wants to clinch.
Tran wants to clinch but Waldbauer slips to the side
and Waldbauer counters with a stiff right hand.
Sloppy strikes from Waldbauer. Those never looked like landing.
Tran is trying hard to land a takedown here. Waldbauer sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Tran gets tackled into the cage by Waldbauer. Waldbauer maintains the clinch.

Waldbauer gets control of Tran's arms and successfully pulls guard. Waldbauer will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Waldbauer wants to stand and escape but Tran is having none of it.
Tran in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Tran wants to stand but Waldbauer has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Waldbauer has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Tran off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Waldbauer has worked on his takedown defense in the runup to this fight and it is paying off so far.

Waldbauer gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Tran to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Waldbauer wants to stand but Tran is controlling the position.
Tran missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Waldbauer is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Tran trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Tran prevents Waldbauer from getting back to his feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Waldbauer's jab looks to have found its range, popping Tran under the eye.
Tran throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Waldbauer is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Waldbauer throws a series of punches but Tran avoids them all with ease.
Tran appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Tran closes this distance looking for a takedown but Waldbauer circles away.
Tran fails to land the takedown.
Waldbauer throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Tran.
Tran walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

Tran drives through with a takedown into Waldbauer's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Tran prevents Waldbauer from getting back to his feet.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Waldbauer manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Waldbauer is trying to break the clinch but Tran has him pressed against the cage.

Waldbauer pulls guard successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Waldbauer is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Tran is controlling him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Waldbauer wriggles free and stands up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Albert Waldbauer dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Waldbauer shoots in and drives through. Tran sprawls well.
Waldbauer moves out of range as Tran strikes.
The fight stays on the outside here - Tran looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

and Waldbauer counters with a straight right hand.
Tran throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Waldbauer.
Tran dives in and grabs Waldbauer's left leg, looking for a takedown. Waldbauer pushes down on Tran's head and hops out.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Waldbauer misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Tran.
Tran misses with a few strikes there.
Tran shoots in for a double leg but Waldbauer sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Tran throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.
Tran on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
A lull in the action here.

Waldbauer trying to control the action but Tran is working from the bottom.
Tran is looking for a sweep.
Waldbauer is looking to take a break and control but Tran is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Waldbauer is putting a hurting on Tran here, landing some big shots from side control.

Waldbauer creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.

Waldbauer is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Tran looks calm but he's in trouble here. Waldbauer gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Tran is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Waldbauer lets go of the hold and Tran can pop his arm back in it's socket.
