PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jiu Jitsu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michael Patrick McDonnell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jiu Jitsu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Michael Patrick McDonnell!
The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Kenichi Hosakawa and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McDonnell throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Jitsu counters with a low kick, right behind McDonnell 's knee.
Jitsu drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
McDonnell throws an overhand right that lands on Jitsu's shoulder, as Jitsu tries to avoid the shot.

McDonnell dives in and scores a takedown into Jitsu's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McDonnell wants to control from the top but Jitsu keeps moving.

Jitsu is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. McDonnell is aware though and is defending well.

McDonnell got a little sloppy there for a moment and Jitsu has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, McDonnell has managed to get both his arms back between Jitsu's legs - danger averted.
McDonnell keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Jitsu's head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jitsu working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. McDonnell doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. McDonnell manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

McDonnell postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
McDonnell content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Jitsu keeping moving, preventing McDonnell from controlling successfully.
McDonnell might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Jitsu haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
McDonnell stopping the sweep attempt from Jitsu.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Jitsu can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as McDonnell controls the pace.
McDonnell trying to control the position from guard on top but Jitsu is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Jitsu escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. McDonnell gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Jitsu is looking for a triangle but McDonnell pushes his legs off easily.

McDonnell passes into half guard.

Jitsu looking for submissions off his back.
Jitsu is in trouble now - McDonnell has advanced to mount!
Jitsu is bucking up trying to escape but McDonnell cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

McDonnell is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Jitsu has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Jitsu is in all sorts of trouble here.
McDonnell wants to control the pace but Jitsu is squirming around nicely.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Jitsu bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Jitsu drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but McDonnell manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Jitsu has McDonnell in his guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
McDonnell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Jitsu swivels though and keeps the full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


McDonnell scores with a jab to the head.
McDonnell lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

Jitsu fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. McDonnell sprawls well initially but Jitsu persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Jitsu is looking for a kimura here.
Jitsu thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed McDonnell's head.

Jitsu looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
McDonnell wants to get back to full guard but Jitsu has passed into side control.

Jitsu wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by McDonnell, who protects the arm well.

Jitsu goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, McDonnell rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Jitsu's guard! Nice work there by McDonnell!

McDonnell trying to control the position from guard on top but Jitsu is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
McDonnell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Jitsu swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Jitsu looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! McDonnell has picked Jitsu up and slammed him! Jitsu can't keep hold of the triangle and McDonnell manages to pass to side control!
Jitsu tries to buck McDonnell off but McDonnell is having none of it.
Jitsu manages to work his way to half guard, despite McDonnell's best efforts.
Jitsu is not content to let McDonnell control the position.

McDonnell is looking for a kimura but Jitsu is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for McDonnell to get the leverage.

McDonnell is pressing down on Jitsu's thigh, looking to free his foot. Jitsu is holding on for now.
McDonnell wants to control but Jitsu is keeping him busy.

Jitsu actively working from the bottom here.

McDonnell is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
McDonnell wants to lay and pray for a moment but Jitsu keeps working.
Jitsu wants to get back to full guard.
McDonnell is trying to control. Jitsu wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Jitsu tries to roll over but McDonnell keeps him under control.
McDonnell blocks the strikes from Jitsu.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
McDonnell is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
McDonnell throws a head kick but Jitsu moves out of range.
McDonnell ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Jitsu takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Jitsu chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before McDonnell can pounce on him.
McDonnell tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Jitsu was well out of range. Poor timing from McDonnell.
McDonnell misses with a kick to the body.
Jitsu changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
McDonnell throws a nice outside leg kick.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

McDonnell is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

Jitsu feinted with a counter takedown.
Jitsu looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Jitsu shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as McDonnell sprawls well. McDonnell wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Jitsu gets slowly back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Michael Patrick McDonnell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


McDonnell throws a series of punches but Jitsu moves out of range.
McDonnell lands with a hook. Jitsu tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
McDonnell throws an overhand right that lands on Jitsu's shoulder, as Jitsu tries to avoid the shot.
Jitsu has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Jitsu there as he acknowledges the shot.
McDonnell misses with a body shot.
McDonnell throws a good cross that connects.
McDonnell stuffs the takedown.
McDonnell stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McDonnell lunges at Jitsu with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Jitsu's hand.
McDonnell has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Jitsu fails with the takedown.
Jitsu takes one on the chin but keeps coming.

McDonnell throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
McDonnell catches Jitsu with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
McDonnell loads up on a big right hand but Jitsu slips the punch.

McDonnell shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Jitsu manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Jitsu isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. McDonnell stacks Jitsu on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by McDonnell!
McDonnell lands an elbow.
McDonnell wants to control but Jitsu is keeping him busy.
Jitsu tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Jitsu tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but McDonnell presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

McDonnell working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jitsu takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Jitsu might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
McDonnell wants to control the pace but Jitsu is squirming around nicely.
Jitsu is wriggling around trying to escape.
Jitsu has given up his back. Will we see McDonnell going for some submissions?
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Jitsu is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
McDonnell tries to get the hooks in deep but Jitsu pushed the leg off.

McDonnell looking for the rear naked choke. And he's got it! Jitsu taps!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:55 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Michael Patrick McDonnell!
Michael Patrick McDonnell decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
