PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Vince Run (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gustavo Borges (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gustavo Borges will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Vince Run!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Gustavo Borges!
The judges for this bout are David Hoff, Daniel Franklin and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Run pushes Borges up against the cage in a clinch.
Run jumps guard but Borges stands there with Run around his waist. Run gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Borges wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Run has him pressed against the cage.
Borges is trying to break free.
Run has been working on his balance at Foot Loves, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Borges.
Run drops down looking for an ankle pick but Borges pulls his leg out and moves away.

Borges moves into the clinch.

Run breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Run rushes Borges and presses him up against the cage.

Run breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Run goes for a double leg but Borges avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Borges continues to drive forward.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vince Run. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Run keeps control of Borges as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Borges can't break the clinch.

Borges has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Run uses from the top position.
Run not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Borges manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Borges looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Run is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Run has hold of one of Borges's legs. Borges is fighting the takedown attempt but Run gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Run accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Borges is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Borges throws a right hand that Run ducks under and follows up with a left that Run also avoids with ease.
Borges swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Run lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Borges circles away quickly and effectively.

Run throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Run drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Borges takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Run decides to stand back up.
Run shoots in for a double leg but Borges sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Borges gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Borges is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Run wants to control from the top but Borges keeps moving.
Run is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Vince Run will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

and Run counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Borges!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Run stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Gustavo Borges seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Borges is breathing heavily.

Run is looking to take this one to the mat.

Run breaks the clinch.
Borges rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Run moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Borges shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Run eats them both and turns towards Borges to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

Borges is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Run pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Run breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Borges fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

and Run counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Run lands a nice short elbow.
Borges is not content to let Run control the position.

Run decides to stand and escape the position.
Run shoots in but Borges avoids the takedown attempt easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vince Run. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Borges gets caught flat footed, as Run shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Borges is still in real trouble! Can Run finish him?

Run is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Borges's shoulder. That is not cool.

Run tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Run has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Vince Run is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Run tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Borges looks to land a combination but Run avoids it well.
Run displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination.

Run shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Run was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Run thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Run is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Borges can do to turn this around?

Run has hold of Borges's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Borges manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Run is looking for a rear naked choke here but Borges reverses the position brilliantly into Run's guard!
Borges must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Run manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Run has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
