PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kullervo Koljatti (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Sandford (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Koljatti comes to the cage accompanied by Black Label Society - Fire It Up. Sandford has chosen Two steps from hell-Heart of courage as his entrance music. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Kullervo Koljatti!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Sandford!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Koljatti wants to clinch up but Sandford keeps it at a distance.
A jab from Koljatti misses.
Koljatti tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Koljatti's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Sandford connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Koljatti scrambles back to his feet.
A looping hook to the body misses from Koljatti. Sandford does a little dance to reset his feet.
Despite the aggression on Sandford's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Koljatti tries to close the distance and clinch but Sandford swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Sandford throws a right and a left that Koljatti avoids nicely.
Koljatti quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.

Koljatti clinches up with Sandford and pushes him back against the cage.
Sandford has a couple of punches blocked by Koljatti.

Sandford breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Koljatti has taken the fight to the clinch.
Sandford lands a body shot in the clinch.
Koljatti's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Sandford scores with a nice hook to the head.
Sandford lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Sandford's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Koljatti defending well as Sandford loads up on a big left hand.
We've been told by Koljatti's head coaches at Combat Zone [15 Elite & Sauna that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Koljatti fails in his attempt to clinch.

Sandford connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Sandford lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Sandford.
Koljatti wants to clinch up but Sandford keeps it at a distance.
Sandford with the counter takedown but Koljatti avoids it easily.
James Sandford seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sandford misses with a wild combination.

Sandford scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Koljatti being controlled for a moment.
Koljatti is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Sandford has just dragged him back down to the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sandford throws an elbow but Koljatti slips to the side and avoids it well.
Sandford misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Koljatti is trying to improve his position.
Sandford wants to lay and pray for a moment but Koljatti keeps working.
Sandford cracks Koljatti with a big elbow.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Koljatti dodges the ground and pound from Sandford.

Sandford is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Koljatti has escaped the position, nice work there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Koljatti is working to avoid the ground and pound but Sandford connects with a decent elbow.
Sandford trying to control the action but Koljatti is working from the bottom.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Koljatti wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Sandford looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Sandford tries to score with some ground and pound. Koljatti controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sandford in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Koljatti is not content to let Sandford control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Sandford scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Koljatti to see if he's OK.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Sandford dominated that round.
That's time! Koljatti's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Sandford throws a big shot that misses.
Koljatti misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Sandford throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Koljatti tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sandford is in Koljatti's guard.
Koljatti will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Koljatti working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Sandford.
Sandford stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Koljatti swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Koljatti wants to sweep but no luck.
Sandford slips nicely into half guard.
Sandford trying to control the action but Koljatti is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sandford is working for a submission of some sort.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sandford is trying to control the action in half guard but Koljatti is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Koljatti wants to control but Sandford is keeping busy.
Koljatti pushes Sandford off looking to stand but Sandford dives back in and keeps control.
Koljatti tries to roll over but Sandford keeps him under control.
Koljatti trying to control but Sandford postures up.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
A telegraphed right hand from Sandford misses the target.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
The fight stays on the outside here - Koljatti looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Koljatti tries to close the distance and clinch but Sandford swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Koljatti closes the distance and clinches.

Sandford breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Sandford looks to throw the jab but Koljatti is out of range.
Koljatti tries to clinch up but Sandford circles away and keeps his distance.
Kullervo Koljatti is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Koljatti misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Sandford.
Sandford throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Koljatti sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Sandford keeps the fight on the outside.
Koljatti wants to clinch
and Sandford counters with a huge left! Koljatti is in big trouble! He's backing up but Sandford isn't giving him chance to recover. Under a barage of punches the ref has to step in to save Koljatti from any more damage. A dominating finish by Sandford!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:43 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). James Sandford!
After the fight, James Sandford was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
