Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tony Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shane Waitzel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). He arrived on a last minute flight shortly after looking tired and unhappy. Officials decided the fight should still take place, much to the delight of the fans in attendance.
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tony Mendez and Shane Waitzel. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 51 - 28 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Tony Mendez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 38 - 10 - 0, fighting out of New York, Shane Waitzel!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, John Kavanagh and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendez misses with a body punch
and Waitzel counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Nice sprawl there from Waitzel as Mendez shoots in.
Mendez lands with a straight right. Waitzel didn't see that one coming.

Mendez gets the takedown into side control.
Mendez misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Mendez in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Mendez tries to advance to mount but Waitzel denies him.
Mendez working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Mendez looks up at the clock and then as Waitzel takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Mendez smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Waitzel tries to improve position but can't.
Mendez misses with an attempted head punch from side control.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Mendez is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Waitzel has escaped the position, nice work there.
We've been hearing good reports from Mendez's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Waitzel is looking to regain half guard here but Mendez keeps moving and retains side control.
Mendez is putting a hurting on Waitzel here, landing some big shots from side control.

Mendez has an Americana. Waitzel didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Mendez is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Mendez hooks up with any of them at the after show party.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Tony Mendez!
A relieved looking Tony Mendez thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
