PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Flash Gordon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Corey Slate (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gordon comes into the arena with Slipknot-The Blister Exists blaring out of the sound system. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Flash Gordon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Corey Slate!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gordon dives in and grabs Slate's left leg, looking for a takedown. Slate pushes down on Gordon's head and hops out.
Horrible takedown attempt by Gordon or perhaps it was just good defense by Slate, which made it look bad.
Slate throws out a counter right but Gordon avoids it with no problem.
Gordon has his takedown stuffed
and Slate counters with a straight right hand.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Flash Gordon. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Slate lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Flash Gordon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Slate circles away from the clinch attempt

and Slate counters with a leg kick then a big left hand that sends Gordon down! Slate is looking to finish but Gordon is intelligently defending himself.


Gordon is rocked!
Slate throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Slate slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Slate postures up.
Slate is stalling in the full guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Gordon closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Gordon takes the fight into the clinch.
Gordon wants to take the fight to the mat but Slate manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Slate can't find room to land a body shot as Gordon controls the action.
Gordon takes a shot to the head.
Slate landing knees to the head.
Gordon blocks an uppercut.
Gordon is trying to drag Slate to the mat but Slate just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Gordon goes for a takedown attempt but Slate pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Gordon darts in and clinches Slate up against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Slate misses with a knee strike.
Gordon tries to pull guard but Slate holds him up against the cage and eventually Gordon drops back down to his feet.
Slate trying to land knees to the body.
Gordon is trying to pull guard but Slate has him pressed against the cage.
Slate misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Gordon jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Slate walks away with a smile on his face. Gordon gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Gordon fails with a takedown attempt.
As Gordon backs off Slate throws a huge counter combo but Gordon manages to avoid it all.
Gordon shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Slate defends it nicely.
Gordon tries to close the distance and clinch but Slate swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Slate misses with a jab, cross combination.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gordon slips under a jab.
It looked like Gordon was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Corey Slate is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Slate throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gordon is defended easily by Slate.
Gordon throws a lazy uppercut
and Slate counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Gordon tries to clinch but Slate moves out of range.
Gordon is looking to clinch but Slate is avoiding it.

Slate closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Gordon is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Knees to the body from Slate.
Gordon struggles to land a body shot inside as Slate controls his hands.
Slate unloads a knee to the mid-section. Gordon lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Gordon takes a knee to the side of the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Corey Slate dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Slate dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Gordon tries to close the distance and clinch up but Slate swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Jab, jab by Slate - just one landing.
Gordon tries to clinch but Slate is having none of it.
No joy there for Gordon, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
A combination from Slate does no damage.
Slate throws a big shot that misses.
Gordon moves to clinch but Slate breaks away
and Slate counters with a left to the body.
The fight stays on the outside here - Gordon looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gordon shoots in for a double leg but Slate sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Slate has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Slate throws a hook to the side of Gordon's head but Gordon sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Gordon moves into the clinch successfully.
Our sources have told us that Gordon has been working on his knees in the buildup to the fight.

Gordon just leaning against Slate, taking a breather.
Gordon misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Slate.
Knees in the clinch landing for Slate.
Gordon is trying to break the clinch but Slate is controlling him.
Slate tries to land a knee to the head but Gordon blocks with his arms.
A shot in the inside from Slate.
Gordon tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
A nice right hand lands inside from Slate.
Corey Slate seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Slate lands a body punch.
Slate digs a right hand into Gordon's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Gordon's gas tank.
A body shot lands from Slate.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Gordon tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Gordon jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Slate walks away with a smile on his face. Gordon gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Corey Slate seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Slate misses with a wild combination.
Slate stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Gordon.
Gordon wants to clinch.
A countering left hand to the body from Slate misses.
Gordon looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Gordon shoots in looking for a takedown but Slate manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Gordon's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
A head kick misses from Slate.
Gordon wants to clinch but Slate slips to the side
and Slate counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Gordon is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Gordon fails with a takedown attempt.
Despite the aggression on Slate's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Slate swinging wildly here.
Slate has worked on his takedown defense in the runup to this fight and it is paying off so far.
Slate lands with a nice body punch.

Slate has Gordon up against the cage in a clinch.
Gordon avoiding damage as Slate throws knees to the body.
Slate working some nice short punches in the clinch.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Slate.
Slate lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Gordon or not.
Slate tries a body shot but Gordon blocks it.
Slate struggles to land a body shot inside as Gordon controls his hands.

Gordon on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
A nice right hand lands inside from Slate.
Gordon is looking for a takedown.
Slate lands a right hand that snaps the head of Gordon backwards.
Slate misses with a knee strike.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Gordon goes for a takedown in the clinch but Slate prevents it.
Gordon fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Slate lands a right hand.
Slate avoiding damage as Gordon throws knees to the body.
Gordon connects with a nasty looking knee right to Slate's face.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Gordon goes for a takedown attempt but Slate pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Flash Gordon is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Slate lands with a kick to the ribs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Corey Slate showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!



Slate drops Gordon with a left right combo! Slate follows him down to the ground into side control.
Oh Gordon is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Slate moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Slate postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Slate advances to full mount.
Slate has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Poor strikes thrown by Slate there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Gordon seems to have got his legs back now.
Slate throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Slate trying to control but Gordon is having none of it.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Let's hope that Slate has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Slate tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Gordon tries to reverse the position but Slate maintains control.

Gordon keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Slate wants to control the pace but Gordon is squirming around nicely.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Gordon gets back to half guard.
Gordon trying to hold on to Slate's head to control him but Slate postures up.
Flash Gordon has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Slate is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Slate is working for a submission of some sort.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
A shot to the body from Gordon misses
and Slate counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Slate connects with an inside leg kick.
Gordon tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Slate manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Gordon moves into range and clinches up with Slate.

And that's the end of the fight!
Corey Slate comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Slate has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3 rounds of action, we go to the scorecards for a decision.
