PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Beltran (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter Higgens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Carlos Beltran has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Carlos Beltran!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Peter Higgens!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Chris Saunders and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Beltran lands a right hook to the body.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Beltran enables Higgens to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Beltran manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Beltran looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Beltran working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Higgens.
Higgens trying to control but Beltran is working from the bottom.

Beltran looking for a guillotine here but Higgens defends easily.
Beltran preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Higgens won't allow Beltran to sweep him here.

Higgens postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Beltran is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Higgens, into his guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Beltran postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Beltran prevents Higgens from escaping the position.
Higgens tries to strike from the bottom but misses.
Higgens gets back to half guard.

Beltran is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Beltran working over Higgens with some ground and pound. Higgens looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Beltran takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Higgens is not content to let Beltran control the position.
Higgens told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.

Beltran seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Higgens does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Beltran stops Higgens from getting back to his feet.
Beltran drops an elbow to the side of Higgens's head.

Higgens is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Beltran pulls his head out easily.
Higgens has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Beltran is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Higgens has his foot on Beltran's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Beltran works his way back into a safe position though.

Higgens is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Beltran wants to control from the top but Higgens keeps moving.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Higgens has hold of Beltran's hands but Beltran slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carlos Beltran dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


A telegraphed takedown attempt from Higgens is defended easily by Beltran.
It looked like Beltran was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Beltran scores with a one two! Higgens had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Higgens takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Beltran misses the shot to the body.
Higgens throws out a counter right but Beltran avoids it with no problem.
Beltran lands a body shot.
Beltran lunges at Higgens with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Higgens's hand.


Higgens is rocked!
Beltran lands with a jab that stuns his opponent. Higgens is looking to close the distance but Beltran sees it coming and throws a beautiful knee! Higgens crumbles to the mat and that's all she wrote! Let's hope Higgens is OK because that was naaaaaasty!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:44 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Knee). Carlos Beltran!
Our winner, Carlos Beltran, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
