PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bunaidi Pakpahan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sergey Vasilyev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sergey Vasilyev has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Bunaidi Pakpahan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Sergey Vasilyev!
The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, Santiago Holmes and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vasilyev shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Pakpahan as he jumps to the side.
Pakpahan swinging wildly here.
Pakpahan displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Vasilyev.
Vasilyev throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Pakpahan's waist but Pakpahan gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Vasilyev off to one side.
Bunaidi Pakpahan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sergey Vasilyev.
Vasilyev slips a jab and a cross from Pakpahan.
Vasilyev tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Pakpahan defends well and Vasilyev ends up having to push Pakpahan into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Vasilyev ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Pakpahan has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Pakpahan is not content to let Vasilyev control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vasilyev working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Vasilyev tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Vasilyev has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Vasilyev is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Pakpahan is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Pakpahan can't do much from the bottom here.

Vasilyev swings around for an armbar but Pakpahan sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Vasilyev's guard.

Pakpahan passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Vasilyev!

Vasilyev reaches up to try and control the position but Pakpahan seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Vasilyev rolls and tries to escape and now Pakpahan has his back!
Pakpahan is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Pakpahan gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Pakpahan gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Pakpahan apologises and we restart here on the feet.
Pakpahan tries to bum rush Vasilyev with a series of wild strikes but Vasilyev uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Vasilyev uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Pakpahan.
Vasilyev's coach down at The GYM (20 elite coaches on the Island !!!) was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Vasilyev's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Vasilyev looks for a takedown but Pakpahan sprawls well.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pakpahan swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Vasilyev avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Vasilyev drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Pakpahan defends it well.
Pakpahan ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Vasilyev fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bunaidi Pakpahan dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Vasilyev closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Vasilyev lands in his opponent's guard.

Vasilyev has gone for a leg lock! Pakpahan slips out almost immediately though and dives into Vasilyev's guard.

Pakpahan drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Pakpahan jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Vasilyev has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pakpahan can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Vasilyev had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Pakpahan defends it easily.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Vasilyev can't keep his opponent in guard - Pakpahan advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Pakpahan is nestled in close to Vasilyev, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Bunaidi Pakpahan overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Pakpahan winds up and cracks Vasilyev with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Vasilyev is working on a guillotine. He's managed to get to full guard and he's really squeezing tight! Pakpahan is tapping! Great win for Vasilyev!
