PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between James Pilkington (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Nugent (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Pilkington!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, David Nugent!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Columbo Gatti and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pilkington throws a head kick but Nugent moves out of range.
Nugent looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.

Pilkington looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Nugent wants to control but Pilkington is keeping busy.
Pilkington with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Nugent looks like he's trying to stand up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nugent is staying active underneath Pilkington, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pilkington tries to pass to full mount but Nugent defends it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pilkington seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Nugent does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Nugent wants to improve his position but Pilkington is controlling well.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Pilkington feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Pilkington knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Nugent on the ground.
Nugent looks winded!
Pilkington wants to pass the guard but Nugent is keeping the position.
Nugent is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Nugent wants to get back to his feet but Pilkington is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Pilkington tries to free his leg and advance position but Nugent is retaining full guard.

Nugent looking for a sweep. Not yet Nugent, not yet.
Nugent is still trying to improve position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Pilkington slips a jab from Nugent.
Pilkington leaves Nugent with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Pilkington was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Pilkington trying to control the position from guard on top but Nugent is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pilkington has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Pilkington is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Pilkington tries to clinch up but Nugent circles away and keeps his distance.
Nugent shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Pilkington pinned against the cage. Pilkington gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Pilkington fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Pilkington dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Nugent working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pilkington doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Nugent is tightening it up a little... Pilkington has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Pilkington reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Pilkington taps out! Nice BJJ there by Nugent!
