PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between James Carter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonas Atentokumpis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jonas Atentokumpis was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, James Carter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jonas Atentokumpis!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Michael Johnstone and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Atentokumpis scores with a spinning back kick!

Carter closes the distance and clinches.
Atentokumpis wants a takedown.
Carter is pushing Atentokumpis up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Atentokumpis tries to pull guard but Carter holds him up against the cage and eventually Atentokumpis drops back down to his feet.

Carter pulls guard effortlessly.
Carter is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Atentokumpis is controlling him.
Atentokumpis controlling from the top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Atentokumpis won't allow Carter to sweep him here.

Atentokumpis stops Carter from standing up.
Carter looking to control.
Atentokumpis engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Atentokumpis pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Carter is keeping the position for now.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Carter might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Carter could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Carter throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Despite the aggression on Atentokumpis's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Carter feints and as Atentokumpis raises his hands in defense, Carter changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Atentokumpis is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Carter is aware though and is defending well.

Atentokumpis trying to keep a closed guard but Carter is proving a slippery customer.
Atentokumpis wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Atentokumpis manages to escape and get back to his feet.

Atentokumpis scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Atentokumpis works to advance to full mount. Carter defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Atentokumpis prevents Carter from getting the reversal.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Carter regains half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Carter is looking to control Atentokumpis's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Carter avoid being mounted?
Carter is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Atentokumpis scores with a couple of nice shots.

Atentokumpis seems to be working for a kimura but Carter defends the submission attempt.
Carter has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Atentokumpis is working away from the top position though.

Carter tries to get to full guard but Atentokumpis has control of the leg.

Atentokumpis is looking for a kimura here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Carter is trying to maintain the position but Atentokumpis is very close to passing his half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Atentokumpis shoots in for a takedown but Carter shows good takedown defense.
Atentokumpis shoots for a takedown but Carter saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Carter tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Atentokumpis defends well and Carter ends up having to push Atentokumpis into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Atentokumpis closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Carter quickly recovers to half guard.
Carter moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Atentokumpis must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Atentokumpis trying to control the position from guard on top but Carter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Carter working a defensive guard but Atentokumpis manages to pass into side control anyway.
Atentokumpis has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Carter managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Atentokumpis.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

Atentokumpis remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Carter is looking to reverse the position.
Atentokumpis is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Atentokumpis is looking to take a break and control but Carter is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Jonas Atentokumpis has got the better of the ground game so far.
Atentokumpis postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

You can see the frustration on Carter's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Carter tries to land a leg kick but Atentokumpis saw it coming and moves away.
Carter tries to clinch but Atentokumpis moves out of range.
Carter throws a sloppy head kick and Atentokumpis moves out of range easily.
Carter wants to clinch.

Atentokumpis closes the distance and clinches.
Carter fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Carter has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Atentokumpis lands a shoulder strike.
Atentokumpis looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Atentokumpis is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Carter pulls him back up using the underhooks.
James Carter has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonas Atentokumpis.
Carter wants a takedown but no success here.
Atentokumpis gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Carter.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Carter gets a trip takedown into half guard.

Atentokumpis wants to get back to his feet.
Atentokumpis has his hands clasped together around Carter's back. He's all about the action.

Atentokumpis is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Carter pulls his head out easily.

Jonas Atentokumpis showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Carter doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Atentokumpis counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Carter is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Atentokumpis is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Atentokumpis throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Atentokumpis working the head and body with strikes.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Atentokumpis trying to mount his opponent but Carter defends it.
Carter is looking to improve his position.

Atentokumpis is taking a breather. Carter says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Atentokumpis postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Carter to stand up.
Carter takes a swing at Atentokumpis's ribcage but misses.

Carter forces Atentokumpis back against the cage and clinches.

Atentokumpis breaks the clinch.

Atentokumpis closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Carter to the mat! Carter manages to get full guard.
Carter preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Carter throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

Atentokumpis stands and throws Carter's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Atentokumpis working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Atentokumpis decides to stand back up. Atentokumpis steps back and let's Carter get back to his feet.
Atentokumpis misses with a jab, cross combination.

Atentokumpis shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Carter napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Atentokumpis cracks Carter with a big elbow.

Atentokumpis stands up.

Carter scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Carter trying to control the position but Atentokumpis is working away.
Atentokumpis is looking for a sweep.
Carter wants to lay and pray for a moment but Atentokumpis keeps working.
