PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Yoshi Hoshi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kazuki Katsuo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kazuki Katsuo will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Yoshi Hoshi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kazuki Katsuo!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Taro Takaoka and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hoshi feints and as Katsuo raises his hands in defense, Hoshi changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Katsuo throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Katsuo is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Katsuo tries to strike from the bottom.
Hoshi showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Hoshi won't allow Katsuo to get back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hoshi decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Hoshi gets tackled into the cage by Katsuo. Katsuo maintains the clinch.

Katsuo breaks the clinch.

Katsuo clinches up against the cage.
Katsuo is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Hoshi drags the fight down to the ground.
Katsuo wants to pass the guard but Hoshi is keeping the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hoshi avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Katsuo throws a big elbow that misses.
Hoshi has control of Katsuo's left arm, preventing Katsuo from doing any damage.
Hoshi has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Katsuo with a flurry of punches that miss.

Hoshi is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Hoshi decides to stand and escape the position.
Katsuo misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Katsuo closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Hoshi fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Katsuo tries a body shot but Hoshi blocks it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Katsuo is pushing Hoshi up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Katsuo is leaning against Hoshi and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Katsuo fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Katsuo wants to take the fight to the mat but Hoshi manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Yoshi Hoshi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kazuki Katsuo.
Hoshi wants a takedown but no success here.
Hoshi is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Katsuo to keep the fight standing.

Katsuo has closed the distance and engaged Hoshi in a clinch.
Katsuo tries to pull guard but Hoshi forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Katsuo lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Hoshi tries to pull guard but Katsuo holds him up against the cage and eventually Hoshi drops back down to his feet.

Katsuo pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Katsuo moves into the clinch.

Katsuo manages to break the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Katsuo gets caught flat footed, as Hoshi shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Hoshi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Katsuo swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Katsuo wants to stand and escape but Hoshi is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Kazuki Katsuo will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Hoshi moves into the clinch.
Katsuo lands a left hand.
Katsuo tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Hoshi's elbow.
Hoshi is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Katsuo to keep the fight standing.
Katsuo lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Hoshi jumps guard but Katsuo stands there with Hoshi around his waist. Hoshi gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Katsuo pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Hoshi tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Kazuki Katsuo seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.
Hoshi is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Katsuo pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Hoshi has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Katsuo avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Katsuo goes for a takedown in the clinch but Hoshi prevents it.
Hoshi has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Katsuo after a bit of a struggle.
Hoshi tries for a takedown but Katsuo manages to get underhooks.
Hoshi is trying to pull guard but Katsuo has him pressed against the cage.

Katsuo throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Hoshi doesn't succeed with the takedown
letting Katsuo counter with a right hand.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Katsuo has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Katsuo looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Kazuki Katsuo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Hoshi is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Katsuo has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Hoshi has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Katsuo avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Katsuo manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Yoshi Hoshi overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Hoshi takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Hoshi is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Hoshi gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!

Katsuo has closed the distance and engaged Hoshi in a clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hoshi wants a takedown but no success here.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Kazuki Katsuo.
I've got Katsuo winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A determined Kazuki Katsuo didn't want to dwell on this fight in his post fight interview. Instead he was more keen to state he wants a title shot. Let's see if he gets it!
