PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kobe Beef (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Antero Mela (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kobe Beef!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Antero Mela!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Daniel Bishop and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mela throws a body punch but Beef moves out of range.
Beef ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

Mela feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Mela trying to control the position from guard on top but Beef is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Beef wants to sweep here but Mela controlling him for the moment.
Mela forces his way into half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mela wants to free his trapped foot but Beef is holding on for dear life with his legs.
My spies in The Shark Tank inform me that Mela has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Beef wants to control but Mela is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Beef keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Mela is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Beef reverses the position - he's now on top in Mela's guard.
Mela looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Mela wants to improve his position but instead Beef has moved into half guard.

Beef is trying to control. Mela wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mela is pressing down on Beef's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Beef working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Mela's head.
We've been hearing that Beef has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Mela is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Mela has his foot on Beef's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Beef works his way back into a safe position though.
Beef wants to control from the top but Mela keeps moving.

Mela is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mela tries to get to full guard but Beef has control of the leg.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mela is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Beef's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Beef's back!
Beef is keeping busy.

Mela is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Beef has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
Mela looking to hold on to the position here but Beef rolls and ends up regaining guard.
Beef will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Mela working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Mela throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Beef works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Mela wants to control from the top but Beef keeps moving.
Mela loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

and Beef counters with a shoot takedown. Mela fights it but they end up in guard.
Mela manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Beef manages to get himself to full guard.

Mela stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Beef swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Beef controls Mela momentarily but Mela frees himself.

Mela wants to control but Beef is keeping him busy.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mela working the head and body with strikes.
Mela looks up at the clock and then as Beef takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Mela smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Mela looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Mela is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Beef defends it well.

Beef is looking to improve his position.
Antero Mela has got the better of the ground game so far.
Mela trying to pass the guard but Beef defending well.

Mela is looking for a kimura but Beef is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mela to get the leverage.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Mela sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Beef defending well though.
Beef trying to control but Mela postures up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Antero Mela showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Beef swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
A swing and a miss from Mela.
A quick step to the side and Beef tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Mela throws a big shot that misses.
Mela thows a left - swing and a miss!
Mela throws out a powerful jab.


It looks like Kobe Beef has been cut.
Mela misses with a straight right.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mela takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Beef moves away from the strike by Mela.
Nice defenses there by Beef.
A little feinted left hand from Beef on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

Mela swings and misses with a shot to the body
and Beef counters with a stiff right hand.
Mela throws a shot from downtown. Beef moves away and avoids it.
Beef is looking for a counter combo.

Beef throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Mela tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Beef is in Mela's guard.
Mela not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Mela looking to hit a scissor sweep but Beef is one step ahead there.

Mela looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Beef passes into half guard.
Mela moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Beef controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Beef has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Mela has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Beef can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Mela is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Mela is looking to stall here but Beef recovers full guard.
Mela advances position into side control!
Mela tries to advance to mount but Beef denies him.
Mela fails to land a wild elbow strike.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Mela is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Beef has escaped the position, nice work there.

Mela tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Kobe Beef has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Beef avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Mela.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mela tries to score with some ground and pound. Beef controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
Antero Mela comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Mela has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
