PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kylma Jaak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Denver Washington (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kylma Jaak!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Denver Washington!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Josh West and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Washington blocks a jab.

Washington shoots in and gets a takedown into Jaak's guard.
Jaak is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Washington trying to control the position from guard on top but Jaak is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Jaak escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Washington gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Washington advances to half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Washington is working for a kimura but Jaak is defending it quite comfortably.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Washington perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Jaak is trying to maintain the position but Washington is very close to passing his half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Jaak throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Washington shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Jaak's guard.
Washington pushes down on Jaak's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Washington works his foot free and advances to mount.

Washington goes for an armbar but Jaak turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Jaak.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Washington is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Jaak wants to control the action here but instead Washington manages to pass to full mount!

Washington looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Washington is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Jaak has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Jaak!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Denver Washington dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


No luck with that takedown attempt from Washington.
Washington takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Jaak misses with a looping left.
Washington tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Jaak defends well and Washington ends up having to push Jaak into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Jaak throws a body shot but no joy.
Washington throws a sloppy head kick and Jaak moves out of range easily.

Washington cracks Jaak with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
A looping hook to the body misses from Jaak. Washington does a little dance to reset his feet.
We've been told by Jaak's head coaches at Hilo Training Center that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Jaak tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Washington shoots in for a double leg but Jaak sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

A punch lands to the side of Washington 's head but he takes it in his stride.

Washington goes for a takedown in the clinch but Jaak prevents it.
A short body shot lands from Jaak as the two fighters clinch.
Jaak misses with a body punch.
Washington jumps guard but Jaak turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Jaak tries to stall but Washington uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Washington has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Jaak is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Washington has picked Jaak up - he's going for a ride! Washington dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

Washington is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Jaak is just riding it out for now. Washington eventually gives up the hold.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

A close second round but Denver Washington will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Washington closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Jaak did well to prevent Washington getting side control.
Washington wants to lay and pray for a moment but Jaak keeps working.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Washington decides to pull guard.
Washington wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Jaak is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Washington has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
