PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gunnar Steigelmann (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marcus Fenix (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 10 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gunnar Steigelmann!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 27 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Marcus Fenix!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fenix misses with an attempted mid kick.
Steigelmann doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Fenix misses with a low kick.
Fenix throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Fenix lands a jab to the nose.
Fenix takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Fenix connects with a solid leg kick.
Steigelmann misses with a lunging right hand
and Fenix counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Steigelmann tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Fenix is able to avoid easily.
A little jabbing left from Fenix on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Fenix throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Steigelmann lands a really nice looking cross but Fenix seems unphased.
Fenix scores with a crisp jab that stopped Steigelmann in his tracks.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Fenix catches Steigelmann with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Steigelmann has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
A combination from Steigelmann does no damage.
Steigelmann gets off balance looking for a body kick
and Fenix counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Fenix looks to land a left hand but Steigelmann moved out of range nicely.
Steigelmann uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Fenix.
Fenix throws a poor cross that misses
and Steigelmann counters with a nice uppercut.

Fenix lands a nice looking body shot.
Steigelmann misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Fenix swings and misses with a shot to the body
and Steigelmann counters with a right hand to the body.
Fenix misses with a body shot.
Steigelmann looks to score with a jab to the body but Fenix is just out of range.
Steigelmann avoids the body shot from Fenix.
It looked like Steigelmann was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Fenix.
Steigelmann throws a sloppy head kick
letting Fenix counter with a right hand.
Steigelmann goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Fenix tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Steigelmann was well out of range. Poor timing from Fenix.
Steigelmann swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Fenix misses with a wild body shot.
Nice body punch from Fenix.
A cross from Steigelmann lands.
Steigelmann wants to land a leg kick but Fenix is out of range.
Fenix looks to throw the jab but Steigelmann is out of range.
Fenix waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Steigelmann.

Fenix dives in and scores a takedown into Steigelmann's guard.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Fenix postures up in Steigelmann's guard and throws a big left but Steigelmann blocks it.
Fenix stopping the sweep attempt from Steigelmann.
Steigelmann pulls Fenix in close to prevent any damage.
Steigelmann manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Fenix manages to get himself to full guard.

Steigelmann is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Fenix is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Fenix not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Fenix wants to sweep but no luck.
Fenix trying to control the position.

Fenix has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Steigelmann can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Fenix throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Fenix working a defensive guard here.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Fenix misses the body punch
and Steigelmann counters with a leg kick.
Nice body kick there by Fenix.
Steigelmann takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Fenix is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Steigelmann rather than just go for the knockout.
Steigelmann connects with an inside leg kick.
Fenix fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Steigelmann manages to avoid it.
A chopping leg kick lands by Fenix.
A decent looking cross lands there for Fenix.
Marcus Fenix seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Fenix takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Fenix lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Gunnar Steigelmann is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Fenix avoids the head kick by Steigelmann.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marcus Fenix dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Steigelmann thows a left - swing and a miss!
Steigelmann throws a good cross that connects.
Fenix takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.


It looks like Marcus Fenix has been cut.
Steigelmann throws a series of punches but Fenix moves out of range.
A punch lands to the side of Fenix 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Steigelmann throws an overhand right from the outside, which connects and sends Fenix stumbling backwards into the cage! Fenix bounces back off the cage towards Steigelmann, who cracks him with a two punch combination that drops him to his knees! Steigelmann lands two more shots before the referee has chance to intervene - what a finish! Steigelmann celebrates with his corner as the crowd cheer loudly.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:23 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Gunnar Steigelmann!
After winning the bout, Gunnar Steigelmann thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
