PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Pat O Brien (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Blind Shaman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shaman has chosen Showdown as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Pat O Brien!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Blind Shaman!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Dean Styles and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shaman misses the jab.
O Brien uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Shaman has time to react.
O Brien is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Shaman.
O Brien throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Shaman counters with a stiff right hand.
O Brien steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Shaman. That one must have hurt.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Shaman.
Shaman tries to clinch but O Brien is having none of it.
Shaman lands a nice looking kick to the body. O Brien takes a step back to recover.
Pat O Brien seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
O Brien throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
We've been told by O Brien's head coaches at TC's House Of Pain *LOP* that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
O Brien swings for the body but Shaman moves out of range.

O Brien avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
The fighters circling - O Brien throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Shaman takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

O Brien darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
O Brien thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
O Brien working over Shaman with some ground and pound. Shaman looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Shaman is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of O Brien's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take O Brien's back!

Shaman has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, O Brien has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
O Brien staying busy and making it hard for Shaman to control.
Our spies down at at Mello MMA inform us that Shaman has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?

Shaman is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. O Brien defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
This has been an exciting period of action!
O Brien tries to escape the position.

O Brien might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
O Brien is really stuck here.
Even with his hooks in, Shaman manages to miss with strikes from the back.

Shaman is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.

Shaman is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Blind Shaman dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


O Brien throws a body punch but Shaman moves out of range.
Shaman is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Shaman uses good head movement to avoid the hook from O Brien.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Shaman comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Shaman fakes high and swings low for a body shot but O Brien manages to avoid it.
No joy there for O Brien, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Shaman throws a lazy uppercut
and O Brien counters with a nice uppercut.
Shaman throws a half hearted mid kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
O Brien throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Shaman throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
O Brien swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Shaman ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

O Brien throws a jab when Shaman was well out of range.

O Brien feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Shaman looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! O Brien has picked Shaman up and slammed him! Shaman can't keep hold of the triangle and O Brien manages to pass to side control!
You can see the frustration on Shaman's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Shaman is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on O Brien's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Shaman works his way to full guard. Good work.
O Brien throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
O Brien passes into half guard.
O Brien seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Shaman is trying to maintain the position but O Brien is very close to passing his half guard.
O Brien is keen to just control but Shaman is a slippery customer.
O Brien looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Shaman is trying to defend against the ground and pound but O Brien scores with a couple of nice shots.

Shaman keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
O Brien looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Shaman with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
O Brien wants to pass the guard but Shaman is defending well.
O Brien looks to land a strike but Shaman avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

Shaman is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and O Brien defends well.
O Brien knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Shaman on the ground.

Shaman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Shaman is trying to keep O Brien in close.
O Brien throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
O Brien throws a big elbow that misses.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
O Brien cracks Shaman with a solid left hand.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pat O Brien dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



O Brien closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Shaman to the mat! Shaman manages to get full guard.

Shaman pushes a forearm under O Brien's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, O Brien is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:24 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Blind Shaman!
An out of breath Blind Shaman thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
